I call it brain fog or fibro fog due to having fibromyalgia. Its a part of the condition. Those close to me understand. I don't talk about it much because its me who has to live with it and deal with it every day.

My long term memory is excellent but my shorty term memory can be problematic. I’m never sure if this is due to the ageing process (currently 72 yrs old) or having MS for the past 45 years? Regardless of the cause(s), the way I deal with this issue is to keep personally, ‘refreshing/re-calling’ daily events to try to strengthen greater retention of what has recently transpired - worth a try?

I seem to have a permanent brain fog. If I don't write things down i don't stand a chance of remembering. I forget things within about 5 minutes. However I try to keep my brain active by doing things like crosswords, number puzzles, I refuse to take my prescribed amount of tramadol aor paracetamol and only take oramorph as a last resort at night As I keep saying to my palliative nurse and Dr if I took the prescribed amount I would be like a zombie, as long as I can cope with the level of pain I will carry on as I am.

Am Bipolar 1, GAD, PTS. My memory is definitely worsening with age. Take Quetiapine, Lamotrigine, Bisoprolol. Started taking Pregabalin two years ago. Take Zopiclone, only supposed to be taken for four weeks or so, but been on it for ten years. Was only diagnosed with manic-depression at forty. Before that miss-prescribed SSRI’s for twenty years. I’m convinced these have caused damage. Also prescribed Benzodiazepines. Know these are for short-term crisis use, but have taking Clonazepam for eight months now. Super effective & not built up any tolerance, so still as beneficial as when I started on them. I’m sure this cocktail of meds have seriously messed with short term memory. Also have read that manic-depressive brain cannot produce enough proteins, these are essential in protecting neurons and it’s only going to get worse over time. It’s so difficult, the meds help stop or minimize yet another psychotic break or passive suicidal ideation transitioning to active suicidal ideation. It’s scary knowing that my memory is only going to degrade from now on. Is anyone else in same situation? Doing whatever it takes to get through the day, but knowing that in the long-turn things are only going to get worse?

@Batbill1975 I'm sorry to hear this. I just wanted to ask you about Pregabalin, I take 600mg/day because i have Trigemianal Neuralgia. I hate taking this medication (have done so for 2 years). Have you ever tried to come off it? I would love to but the pain is unbearable without it. I don't know which is worse, the horrific drug or the pain. x

@KarenS Hi. I’m not familiar with Trigeminal neuralgia, so I looked it up. It sounds horrendous and I’m so sorry you’re going through it. I have been taking 200mg of Pregab for Generalised Anxiety Disorder for two years or so. It was effective to begin with, not so sure now. A while ago I was away for a couple of days and forgot to take the Pregab with me, but remembered other meds. It was horrific, I felt physically and mentally dreadful, and ended-up having to coming home early. Totally put me off any idea of stopping it. I don’t know if it’s just the Pregab, but my memory is terrible now. Will be having a conversation and suddenly forget what I’m talking about. People have noticed it and commented on it. I have to write everything down and make so many iCal events on my phone. Pregab is renowned for its effects on memory, along with how it interacts with other meds, especially pain-management meds. It’s why it’s gaining popularity with people who take Opioids, particularly Heroin, because it increases the effect/high. I have taken Pregab with over the counter Codeine and it knocked me senseless. It was a mistake and not one I will repeat. Sorry, I’m rambling on. It’s an impossible choice, I don’t think enough research has been done on Pregabalin, especially how it interacts with other meds. Doctors don’t warn you that once you’re on it, it’s a nightmare to come off and just how badly it effects memory. I honestly don’t think there’s any good choices once you start on Pregabalin. Sorry for long reply and not being much help. Sending positive thoughts, take care.

Both my wife and myself have enormous memory issues but that is age related and with the failing NHS there is nothing we can do beyond 'grinning and baring it'!

Hello everyone,
How are you doing today?
As we get older, many people begin to notice a change in their memory. Most times, it is something that naturally happens with age, but other times it can be linked to a disease.
What about you? Have you noticed memory changes? What do you do to cope? Do you have any tips to share with other Carenity members?
Let's share!
Take care,
Lizzi from the Carenity team
