Hello all, I hope it's alright that I'm posting this. My mum has Alzheimer's and she has progressed into the middle stage, so we're seeing more symptoms and behaviours. She has started to exhibit signs of "sundowning" and I'm at a loss at what to do. She is pretty mild throughout the day, but come late afternoon/early evening she becomes very agitated and a bit nasty. It's heart-breaking to watch because I can see the confusion in her eyes and I think deep inside she's confused and knows that something is going on with her mind.

Do any of you have any tips on how to manage it or prevent it? I'd love to be of some comfort to her when it happens, but she has a tendency to lash out at me and I fear that I'm just making it worse.

@cindylou2 Hello Cindylou2, thank you for opening this discussion. Sundowning is an important topic when it comes to dementia and Alzheimer's care.

For those who may not be familiar with the term, "sundowning" refers to changes in behaviour seen in dementia and Alzheimer's patients that occur in the evening, around dusk. These changes include heightened agitation, anxiety and confusion and can be accompanied by outburst of shouting, arguing or pacing.

Have you all noticed "sundowning" occuring in your loved ones? What do you do to manage it or even prevent it? Feel free to share your advice here, we're all here to help one another!

@cindylou2 @Courtney_J I haven't heard of this and my mum is early on, but I'll definitely know to look out for it.  How do you all handle it? It sounds frightening!
