Hello everyone,

How are you doing today? 😊

This year's Healthier Nation Index report, released by the charity Nuffield Health, reveals a significant sleep problem in the UK.

  • On average, we now sleep only 5.91 hours a night, down from 6.11 in 2022 and 6.19 in 2021.
  • Only 36% reported having 'good' sleep, while 64% struggle to achieve quality sleep with a proper balance between deep and REM sleep.
  • 11% get only 2-4 hours of sleep, and 36% sleep for just 4-6 hours.
  • Merely 8% manage to sleep more than the recommended 8 hours per night.

These numbers are deeply concerning, especially considering the adverse implications of sleep deprivation on our overall well-being and daily functioning, including cognitive impairment, mood disturbances, weakened immune function, and an increased risk of chronic health conditions.

So, what about you? Do you get truly restful sleep? How many hours of it do you clock in every night? What symptoms do you experience when you don't get enough sleep?

We'd love to hear from you! 👇

Take care and have a lovely day,

Somya from the Carenity team 🌼

Well I'm in bed around for 1 am and up around 7 or 8am so the national average the norm for me. My wife a different animal who can sleep it seems 20 hours a day in two sessions normally. With having a grandchild with us full time, school has changed our lives so lazy mornings are out. But my wife slips off to bed to connect with her CPAP machine for an extra couple of hours, I don't generally join her as it messes with my night's sleep. Have left her six or eight hours recently but found it does destroys her nights sleep. So, the biggest problem is balancing the the daytime nap, we are not chair sleepers, my wife needs to be connected to her machine. But in general I hit the pillow and I'm gone, my wife no so great but does get there eventually!

I never have more than about 3 or 4 hours sleep and never feel rested. I joke with my friends that my brain fog is getting worse but it isn't really a funny thing. I take forever to do simple tasks and have to get my son who is my carer, to help with forms etc

thankfully i get a decent nights sleep and only wake for the toilet. i average 7/8 hours sleep most nights. but i want to point out that i do breathing and stretching exercises when i go to bed, as this helps me to settle, and clear my mind. sometimes i will listen to a hypnotherapy c.d as this relaxes me and most times i fall asleep before the end of the C.D, then i wake up and turn the c.d off and get back into bed and go to sleep .

I've had epilepsy for many years and have other health issues. My sleep pattern has been constantly disturbed for several years due to changes in medications, side effects of medication, tiredness and much more. I also am up every 2 to 3 hours even though I am on a fluid restricted diet due to low sodium, and suffer from bouts of insomnia often. My mother was a poor sleeper and I put lots of it down to genes also. I usually try to get to bed by 9.30 p.m. but because of the lifestyle we have and after living in Africa for 60 years, I am up at 4.00/4.30 a.m. It is automatic even though we now reside in Northern Ireland.

I think I have forgotten what sleep actually is., I am lucky if I ger 3 to 4 hours disturbed sleep. It is a vicious circle, I have a number of very serious chronic illnesses and can't sleep because of them. It is getting out of hand though as I am frightened to go to bed subconsciously I think I am scared that if I actually get to sleep I won't wake up.

@sdonnelly12 - For some of us, it is also accompanied by, severe, puntuation deprivation too.
