Hello, I'm 32 years old, and in October 2019 I was discovered to have fatty liver. After a blood test with my GP who sent me to a gastroenterologist who in turn prescribed an MRI, ultrasound and liver elastography, the tests showed a 25% fatty liver with no fibrosis, a ferritin level of 1264 and all the rest of my blood tests in the normal range.

The gastro told me and my doctor to lose weight and all it would all go back to normal. Since then, I've lost 15 kilos and today I weigh 80 kilos. I'm very active, I do 3 hours of biking every Sunday and walking twice a week for 1h30, and I've been making an effort with my diet.

I had another blood test yesterday and I'm upset. Ferritin is 870 and iron is 163, so I am very worried because I don't understand. The doctors tell me "don't worry, you're on the right track"...  I don't know what to do anymore... I'm doing everything possible and I'm losing weight, but I'm not getting better! I'm not seeing any improvement! Has anyone been through this?

@MJ2015 Hello MJ2015, thank you for opening this discussion. I'm sorry to hear you're not seeing the improvement you hoped for. Let me tag some members who can maybe share their thoughts or advice with you.

Hi everyone, how are you doing? Are you aware of your ferratin and other levels? Have you ever felt like your NAFLD or NASH isn't improving despite all your efforts? What should we do to lose weight and how long does it take to see the effects? Feel free to share any thoughts or advice here!

Perhaps my story will be of some help! Diagnosed with fatty liver about 20 years ago, I modified my diet - ate very little fat, ate lots of fruit and veg, tried to reduce my cholesterol level without medication and had some success. Symptoms disappeared until about a year ago.

I started taking red yeast rice to reduce cholesterol before a visit to cardiologist. I had been on it for about 3 months before blood tests in Nov. when I discovered that my liver function was way above what it should have been. Not sure if this was due to the red rice yeast.

I was exhausted, very little energy, generally unwell. Pain under my right rib and between shoulders and a cramping sensation in my liver area. Tried changing my diet but with little success.

In January I went to a medical herbalist she gave me a mixture of herbs including dandelion, sarsprilla camomile and lots of other herbs. I followed a low glycemic diet and lost 21 lbs.

I have regular acupuncture, do yoga daily, walk for at least half an hour every day. I follow a fairly strict diet no meat, I eat plenty of fish, eggs, sprouted beans, tofu, lots of fresh fruit and veg. My condition has improved dramatically. Liver function much improved, triglycerides reduced, I feel so much better, I get occasional pain if I’ve had too much fat or sugar!

I think that if I stick with what I’m doing I will continue to improve. So glad that I have found what works for me! Hope this will help someone else.

By the way I was 70 in May.

Regards

Brid

@Livers Thank you for sharing this, I've been frustrated with just the "eat better" advice I've gotten from my GP. I'll look into red  rice yeast, I've never heard of it. I've been trying to incorporate more fruit and veg and get some more exercise but it was hard in lockdown and I lost barely any weight.

@MJ2015 I'm sorry you're not seeing improvement, but it sounds like you're on the right path. Maybe it's just a matter of waiting a bit more to see results? I'm new to NASH thought so I don't really know.
