Hello everyone,

I hope you’re doing well.

Type 2 diabetes can increase the risk of cognitive decline, raising the chances of conditions like Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia. Research shows that managing blood sugar, staying active, and making healthy lifestyle choices can help slow down brain ageing. 🧠

Have you made any changes to protect your brain health while managing diabetes?
Do you incorporate specific foods, mental exercises, or physical activity into your daily routine?
What strategies have helped you stay sharp and manage your health long-term?

What I can say I attended University as a mature student and with the lifestyle I put on weight. Not knowing I was diabetic or developing diabetes, I can say my mental abilities took a sudden drop along with my eyesight. As my eyesight varied during the day and my memory got much worse making simple reading a challenge. So, on development of a then unknown diabetes I can say at that time my all round abilities were shot. It was not until several years later, changing my GP that I had my blood sugar levels checked. Off the scale blood sugars and with the help of drugs and diet I was able control my diabetes. In the meantime my mental abilities totally downgraded, so yes it does affect brain health, a hard lesson and compounded rubbish GP.

Hi @robjmckinney,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience so openly. It really shows how serious the effects of undiagnosed diabetes can be, not just physically, but mentally too. That drop in cognitive function and eyesight must have been incredibly frustrating, especially while trying to focus on your studies. Now that your diabetes is under better control, have you noticed any improvements in your memory or cognitive function?

Take care,

Somya from the Carenity Team 🌼
