not personally but whilst recovering from my lobectomy, a dear friend who'd had a bad - extremely painful shoulder for a few weeks went to GP and given ibuprofen which didn't relieve it. he returned and asked for a referral so was sent to community physio who suggested some exercises. these didn't relieve the pain so he had stronger painkillers then paid for chiropractice, osteopath and acupuncture - none of which relieved the pain. he went back to GP and asked to see a specialist and was referred to a MSK consultant who said he'd clearly been overdoing it (he was a carpenter/joiner and it had started after reroofing a property). in the end, in agony, no longer able to drive due to the pain, he paid for a CT scan and on the day of the scan got out of the passenger seat on arrival at the hospital and collapsed, very confused. Many tests followed and after a few days, his wife called me and said he'd been put in a side room, she thought 'to die'. I was shocked - he'd only gone in with a bad shoulder I remember saying - she returned to the hospital with her son to ask for her husband to be let out to home whatever was wrong with him - he died 3 days after diagnosis. - 10 days after admission from widespread lung cancer that was in his spine, liver and brain. I remember being so shocked and looking online at patient forums at the time and seeing that shoulder/back pain was a common symptom often ignored not even listed at that time as a potential symptom for lung cancer. That was in June 2011 and despite it being listed in the list of symptoms by lung cancer charities, many people including healthcare professionals seem less aware of it than they should be, assuming sometimes wrongly that all backache/shoulder pain must have a muscular/skeletal origin. Awareness raising of symptoms needs much more focus amongst healthcare professionals outside lung cancer teams - i.e. emergency room staff, primary care and nurses as it isn't always a respiratory/lung department where such patients present.

Hi everyone, how are you holding up today?
Some symptoms of lung cancer can be hard to connect to the lungs at all, and one that often surprises people is persistent back pain. For Kevin Humphrey, an endurance athlete who was eventually diagnosed with Stage IV non-small cell lung cancer, it was his back pain, not a cough, that started it all.
He described it as a deep, stubborn pain that just wouldn’t go away. At first, doctors thought it was pneumonia, but when the pain lingered, he kept pushing for answers, and that’s when they discovered the tumour.
Back pain is common and can come from many things, but in some cases, like Kevin’s, it’s an early sign of something more serious.
💭 So today we wanted to ask:

Your story could really help others in our community who might be in that early, confusing phase of trying to make sense of their body’s signals.
