This is one area we need to advance and invest for our health services. Importing foreign staff, which is effectively stealing staff from other countries that can ill afford to lose such staff. Yes, the human element does seem to be not as good as AI, together with monitoring health conditions remotely can have massive social benefits. So much of medicine is now AI controlled well beyond the capability of us mere humans. My radiotheraphy totally AI controlled, MRI etc., even seen some videos of operations carried out with the use of AI. So in reality it AI is already well into of medical services and reduce the human services required, perhaps our only real help accessible by us in the futue. Cannot see fault in introducing more AI to a broken health service if it leads to improvements overall!

You raise some very important points. I can understand the frustration with the delays especially when dealing with something as serious as cancer. Maybe a balanced approach, where AI is used to support doctors rather than replace them could be the way forward? I guess a lot depends on the specialty.

I guess AI can relatively easily, from both a technical and acceptance from patients standpoint, replace e.g. radiologists (as it already has). However, for example for pyschiatrists, even if technically AI may have the capacity to perform their tasks, patients may have a substantial difficulty to confide in an AI in the same way.

@gmorlet I see your point! For areas like radiology, where making sense of images is important, AI’s pattern recognition abilities can really come into play. But for psychiatry, where building trust and empathy are required, the human connection is harder to replicate, even if AI could perform the tasks on paper.

How do you think AI might evolve to support, rather than replace, roles like psychiatrists? Do you think there’s a middle ground?

AI is already capable of incorporating human emotions in its responses, so I guess it might start by taking over video consultations, but in-person consultations of psychiatrists would be hard to phase out. Altogether, the short term equilibrium might be AI video consultations but not in-person.
