Hello everyone, how are you doing?

Many chronic conditions like multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, severe osteoarthritis, or neurological diseases can lead to a gradual loss of independence, making everyday tasks like moving around, dressing, or cooking more difficult.

How do you cope with this loss of autonomy? What equipment or services have helped you maintain as much independence as possible?

Living in a state resulting from two rebellions against governmental tyranny; self-reliance, and the daily pursuit of it, is as important as life itself. I have even severed relatuinships to preserve it.

After losing my job in 2002 after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis l was at an all time low. The difficulties with what were once simple tasks to achieve like being able to wash/ dress/ cooking and feeding myself and general routine were a shock to my system. I didn’t want others to see me and how l was. I have now accepted that my life is just going at a different pace and l just needed to adapt. If l am tired l go to sleep. If l want to do something l can. I just need to find a way that makes it a possibility. I have purchased a little teapot with two handles, cutlery that’s easier to use, a non slip mat to put under things like plates/ cups on a tray to stop them slipping about. I have a raised toilet seat, a bath lift , a bed lever that aids getting out of bed and two walking sticks so no more falls for me.A four wheeled shopping trolley enables me to shop unaided. My life’s been different since 2002 but by no means is it over. I just listen to my body and it guides me as to what l can do. I don’t walk as far as l once did but l still go for walks as l believe it is important to keep moving. My grandson was born in 2002 so his arrival made me want to get a grip and get out of my low mood as who wants a grumpy granny ? He has grown up with my disability and from a very young age has helped me. When he was two he used to bring me my “glubs” as he called them ( my hand splints) and if l was feeling sad he would sing “Don’t worry. Be Happy” it’s hard to be gloomy when a little face looks up at you love and compassion. 5 years later his sister was born so l make an effort to keep moving and try to do all l can to show them how to live life to the full. It’s true everything seems to take a bit longer but that sense of achievement when l have done something is great. Good luck & love to all with a chronic condition. Take care everyone. ☺️
