Hello everyone, how are you doing?

Living with a chronic illness often means having to navigate complicated support systems. In the UK, while the NHS provides healthcare, many people with long-term conditions rely on additional government assistance like Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) to help manage daily living costs, transport, and work accommodations. However, there can be a stigma around claiming these benefits. Some people may see it as a “handout,” even though it’s a lifeline for those unable to work or struggling to cover the costs of their care. 😔

The UK media and public perceptions sometimes fuel these misunderstandings, with stories about “benefit cheats” creating negative stereotypes that affect all recipients, regardless of their legitimate need. Unfortunately, this can lead to feelings of judgment or shame for simply accessing support that’s meant to help people live independently and with dignity.

Do you feel judged for using benefits like PIP or ESA? How do you manage these judgments, especially when your condition is invisible or misunderstood by others? Have you encountered support or empathy, or do you find yourself defending your need for these benefits?
