Hello everyone, how's the sunny weather been treating you? ☀️

Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense, with sometimes serious consequences for people living with chronic illnesses. Fatigue, dehydration, cardiovascular problems, or medications that increase sensitivity to sunlight can all worsen your condition in hot weather.

That’s why it’s important to adapt your habits during heatwaves: staying hydrated, resting more, using fans or ACs, and keeping up with your medical appointments can all make a difference. Being better prepared means being better protected, both individually and as a community.

💬 How does your chronic illness react during extreme heat?

🌿 What practices or tips have you found helpful during heatwaves?

📣 Do you feel well-informed and supported during these times?

The only bad thing about summer and the heat is it brings in the monsoon season! It plays havoc on arthritis! I would much rather be in the heat than suffer in the cold and snow!! I can always cool off by being inside with air-conditioning or in a pool. I can never warm up when I get cold.

During the hottest part of summer when it hits around 116-120deg, stay inside or anywhere there is cooling and air-conditioning. Its also a must to stay hydrated and drink lots of water.

Common sense tells you, or should tell you, to stay in the shade, wear high factor sun lotion and stay hydrated! There has been a how to stay safe in the sun campaign for years now and our "Nanny State" government give out colour coded warnings when the temperatures are going to hit the high C's.

As for how my conditions are affected; my ankles swell to double size and are tight, making walking difficult (yes, I stay hydrated!), hay fever is awful I actually feel like I have a virus when the season is at its height; I get tiny red dots (purpura) all over my body when exposed to the sun, they're there all the time anyway, but the heat seems to exacerbate them. I sweat profusely too...but hey ho, I'm alive and I enjoy everything the season can chuck at me!

@VICKICOFFEY Oh god don't get me started on that kind of idiot! 🙄 Like you say, we all know the ending to that one; I've reported several to supermarket security before today.

There was a video of police breaking into a car to retrieve a baby (no older than a few weeks!!) from a red hot car doing the rounds yesterday, it beggars belief that someone would do that!

@Silverlady I too do not drink enough water. I never have been a big water drinker and find it difficult to drink as much as needed. I did start getting individual packs of water flavors, like lemonade and grape. It does help a bit. At least there is flavor to the water!

I dread the hot weather as it affects me badly. I get awful migraines, My joints swell more meaning walking is made even more difficult, l am in considerably more pain, l already have sleep problems & they are made worse by the heat. I have been virtually housebound for the past month due to this awful weather. And when l did have to venture out for a hospital appointment l could of quite easily of snapped at someone for saying ‘ ooh l bet you love this weather & it must soothe your arthritis “ l was polite & replied “no it doesn’t soothe me at all & results in yet more pain” ‘also not everyone is the same, some find the hot weather a comfort. I do not” So l have been staying in the house drinking water to keep hydrated , putting ice packs in front of my fan & praying for rain so l can get my life back on track. I can hardly wait for the cold months to return. If you like the heat good for you & l am happy for you. But, l am not a fan.
