Hi everyone,

How are you doing today?

There have been some concerning updates recently about a resurgence of Mpox (commonly known as monkeypox) cases. The WHO has declared a health emergency due to the virus, which is spreading more rapidly, particularly in urban areas, but also in some rural regions. Although Mpox is relatively rare, it’s contagious and can be potentially dangerous, especially for those with weakened immune systems, older adults, children, and pregnant women.

The WHO has already issued warnings that the new variant appears to be more contagious, and there are indications that existing vaccines might be less effective against it. 😷

Here’s a quick rundown of Mpox symptoms:

  • Fever: Often one of the first symptoms, which can be high.
  • Headaches: Frequently intense.
  • Muscle and back pain.
  • Severe fatigue.
  • Swollen lymph nodes: Unlike human smallpox, swollen lymph nodes are a distinctive sign of monkeypox.
  • Skin rash: Typically starts on the face and spreads to other parts of the body, including the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. The rash progresses through different stages, from flat spots (macules) to raised bumps (papules), fluid-filled blisters (vesicles), and finally, crusts that dry up and fall off.
  • Skin lesions: These can appear on mucous membranes, such as in the mouth, and sometimes on the genitals and eyes.

Some countries are considering reintroducing travel restrictions and quarantine measures to control the spread. It's crucial right now to stay informed about local guidelines and consider protective measures, especially for those at higher risk. Health authorities are working hard to manage the situation, and efforts are underway to update vaccines to better combat this new variant, though the availability of these updated vaccines remains uncertain.

What are your thoughts on this? Are you taking any precautions, or are you waiting to see how things develop? How are you handling the current situation?

Take care and stay safe,

Somya from the Carenity team 🌼
