Hello everyone,

How are you doing today? 😊

I wanted to share some news and get your thoughts on an interesting topic. The UK government is considering offering weight loss injections to unemployed individuals living with obesity as a way to help them get back to work. The idea is that these injections, which are already used to treat obesity and diabetes (like Mounjaro), could ease the burden on the NHS and improve people’s health and employment prospects. They’ve even started a five-year trial in Greater Manchester to see how effective this might be.

While the plan could help some people by making weight loss easier, experts have pointed out that the demand could be overwhelming, and that injections alone aren’t a replacement for adopting healthier lifestyles like eating well and staying active. Some also worry that it focuses more on economic value rather than the well-being of people struggling with obesity.

What do you think? Do you believe weight loss injections could be helpful for people in this situation? Or do you feel there should be a different focus on managing obesity? And if you’ve ever tried medications or injections for weight loss, what was your experience?

I feel this is wrong. There have been proven side effects with these injection. It assumes that being over weight is the only issue people would have, there could still be underlying health issues. Also yes it is a quick fix and allowing people to lose weight without thinking about eating healthily

@fernster I am contacted by the surgery every month before my tablets are issued, I don't like injections. They monitored me well for side effects which there has been not up until now thankfully. Your GP will have extensive knowledge of your health issues and the instructions clear of various side effects where you should stop taking your medicine. Any sign of illness you are required to stop taking the medicine so very much reducing any risk!

Hello @fernster,

Thank you for sharing your concerns. You raise an important point, weight loss injections don’t address all the factors involved in obesity, including underlying health issues. For many people, achieving sustainable health is about more than just the numbers on the scale. Do you think there might be other, more holistic programs that could support people?

Take care,

I am taking the tablet form of this drug, I did not fancy the big needle. But in reality if it helps to reduce the health issues of obesity and might provide the incentive for further weight loss. So, reducing the medical burden to the NHS, especially diabetes which may bankrupt the NHS in the end. Plus the many health benefits to individuals and perhaps allowing some to return to work. Obesity in minorities has been a massive issue causing birth issues and death. In all then looking at the reality of our society it has the real posibility of changing peoples lives for the better, as I hope future medicines will do the same!

Hello @robjmckinney,

Thank you for sharing! It's interesting how it could possibly make a long-term difference in appetite, though I can imagine that losing that much weight in such a short time must have been very stressful. How are you finding it overall in terms of energy or quality of life changes so far?

Take care,

@Somya.P I have seen little benefit so far beyond the weight loss, I am concerned of some side effects which I have not experienced as yet, that is, a percentage of muscule loss. There was a loss when I lost 6 stone in six weeks due to cancer treatment that I could identify. But with this tablet I have not noticed but then again approaching 70 my muscules will be decreasing naturally. As with all diabetics erectile disfunction is common, after 6 stone lost, life shall we say returned to normal. This time no change when I was hoping an improvement, none as yet but then again my age now might be the dominating factor. As to the affect on my diabetes, I was taking every tablet to maximum because I declined injections. I have reduced my drugs myself as I have better control, so that is a success. I have to say my appetite has been reduced and clearly allowed me to reduce my weight. But my brother did bring up the needle device injection, it is painful and does cause bleeding after use, I am thankful I choose the tablet option. The NHS has claimed a new pill/injection is coming out soon with less side effects. I still believe on balance the benefits for the growing diabetic population will be worth the NHS investment!

@robjmckinney

hi Rob, like your comments. Not only should this drug help the diabetes epidemic but will help heart conditions, and in some cases depression.
I have a friend on the injections because his obesity is making his heart conditions worse. He is loosing weight slowly and having no side effects.

Wish you every sauces on your journey

I do not agree as obesity can be caused by many issues, including side effects from medications together with health issues.

I have issues that cause water retention etc and found many medications make one put on weight for no reason.

I also think this system can be abused by those not needing it.

@lesmal Yes, my wife can put on a stone or two when she has water retention session, so health issues certainly affect weight at times. Caused by her weak enlarged heart but then again she has lost lots of weight recently which can be a serious concern. Maybe she has started a terminal phase as old people lose weight before their death, certainly with her various conditions can kill her at any time. Or indeed it could be quite normal to lose weight at her age, either way a close eye is being observed on her stats!
