Depression and Anxiety Struggle!

I've been suffering with anxiety for 5 years, depression for 2. The anxiety only got bad enough for medication two years ago when I was diagnosed with depression - on antidepressants.

I'm in my second year of university, and right now, I am struggling. I work for the NHS as part of my course as I am on an NHS course. I want to tell my doctor just how bad my anxiety and depression has become, but I'm terrified uni will find out and I won't be allowed into work. I'm not a danger to the patients, if anyone it's myself, but I don't want anyone to say I am not fit for work.

I have decided she has to know how much I am struggling with my depression though, but I just don't know how to tell her! I'm not sleeping, but getting out of bed in a morning is so difficult right now. My anxiety has got to the point where my heart is constantly going so fast I feel dizzy, and basically I just feel awful :/

Guess I'm just kind of looking for anybody who has had the same kind of struggles as me!

Hi LilyRose,

I am also in my 2nd year of university studying bio-medicine (which is also a medical based course) and I am to do medicine after my undergraduate degree which will place me in the same position as you are, managing that with battling my depression and anxiety. Maybe it helps to know anything you mention to your doctor is strictly confidential and many many people working within the NHS suffer with mental health conditions, so if you assume that they will just straight away say you are unfit to work i'm 99% sure they definitely wont!. It is important to put yourself first and most importantly be honest with yourself, if you need help go get it and except it, dont be ashamed of it its not a weakness to need help, its brave. Also, I always think within healthcare you cannot give the best help to anyone else if your not mentally ok yourself, so its best now to open up and except some help to give you the best shot at your career like you deserve :)

Best Wishes

Sophie

Hi LilyRose

I am a nurse and I have been struggling with depression/anxiety since 2002.  At first I didn't want people to know but if people do know they can help you and keep an eye on you!  I am taking antidepressants and have tried to come off them but can't as I end up feeling like I'm going mad!!  I have had several courses of counselling which seemed to help at first.  At the moment I am not unduly depressed but it's always lurking in the background.  Please let people know especially at uni and your close friends.  They WILL help you.  Good luck with your studies and with coping with your depression.

hi over the years i have been on and off meds. I have now made to decision to stay on meds as it gives me some sort of coping skills. We do not need to be ashamed, if it helps keep taking. Take each minute or day as it comes and get some peace x
