Hello everyone, just joined this group, have been suffering from depression for over 25yrs, take medication which helps a lot, but lately my panic attacks seem to be getting worst i dont know why, take a diazapam 4 panic attacks but doctor wont give me anymore, so have to resort to buying on line, whick i dont tink its a good idea and i have to take 2-3 of them in order to calm down, any suggestions on how to cope, wen an attack occurs, they can come out of the blue, i cry more over the panic attack then I do over my depression...

Hi there, have you ever had CBT? Everyone I know who has anxiety and panic attacks says that was very helpful indeed. It will give you the tools to manage you panic attacks. The diazepam is useful when there is no other alternative but it sounds like you are becoming tolerant. Maybe a combination of therapy and the diazepam would be better than just relying on the diazepam .

Otherwise all I can say is take a deep breath, go for a walk, listen to some music and remember that the panic will pass. I know how difficult it is to remember this in the midst of a panic attack but it may help with practice.

Hello thank you for you're reply, what is CBT.  I have had therapy and counselling before, when i take an attack i cant think of anything as all i am trying to do is struggle for air, i try to count to ten and, sometimes it helps, but its like my brain shuts down, i keep telling myself i am all right, but when the panic is happening i want to be on my own and lie down, but unfortunately they can happen anytime day or night

CBT is cognitive behavioural therapy. It is different from other forms of psychotherapy as it does not look back into your past, it only focuses on the present. It looks into the way you think ano behave and may give you some techniques to prevent the panic attacks happening in the first place. A lot of people I know have said it helped them more than anything else.

Hello were do i go about finding about CBT, I do not wish to go to my local GP, is there leaflets or can I read abot it on line, thank ou for your feed back

Unfortunately you normally go to you GP and get referred for it. I was referred to a psychologist who then did an assessment to see if CBT would suit me. Unfortunately the waiting list on the NHS can be around 3 months. If you can be available during the day they may be able to give you an appointment sooner. If you don't mind me asking, why do you not wish to see you GP?

If money is not an issue, you may be able to refer yourself to a private therapist who can start treatment immediately. They normally charge between £30 and £60 per hour and you would probably need about 5 or 10 weekly sessions.

I read somewhere that is scientifically proven as one of the most effective techniques for dealing with anxiety so if possible I would definitely recommend looking into it.
