Hi everyone,

Many people living with COPD say that climbing stairs or walking uphill is one of the most challenging parts of daily life. The combination of shortness of breath, muscle fatigue, and uneven energy can make even a few steps feel overwhelming. But over time, some routines or tools can make these moments more manageable.

  • Have you found any helpful strategies for pacing yourself on stairs or hills?
  • Do you use a mobility aid or take breaks along the way?
  • What advice would you give someone newly diagnosed who’s starting to notice this difficulty?

Hi everyone,
For someone newly diagnosed who’s starting to notice this difficulty, my advice would be not to rush and to really listen to your body. When I first started having trouble with stairs, I tried to push through it, but that only made me much more breathless.
Now I take things slowly and pause when I need to, even if it’s just for a few seconds. It makes a big difference. I’ve also learned not to feel embarrassed about stopping to catch my breath.
Over time you start to learn your own pace, and that helps a lot.
Take care.

The best way to describe it for a person who doesn't have copd is that it's like breathing through a straw while walking up the stairs
