Having had an enormous number of accidents in my life, due mainly to balance problems, which were never diagnosed until it was too late! Nevertheless, I am "proud" and make up excuses why I can't climb stairs such as..."I have had an accident so am struggling to get upstairs at the moment".

Now clearly that is true, but I know that people will assume the accident was recent, rather than back in 1988! Can we please debate whether fellow 'sufferers' believe this is the best way to deal with these mobility issues or not?

Yeah it’s a great way, I say I can’t do stairs because of my knees as they are knackered like the rest of me

My balance problems only started recently due to numbness in feet and legs. I have had Arthritis in my spine for 20 years and managed to cope ok till 2 years ago, then I started to struggle with stairs, lifting and bending, we moved in to a flat recently and find it much better for myself. We could have had a stair lift fitted I suppose, but there was far too much garden for us to cope with. we now have a small amount of grass where we can sit out in the summer which suits us fine. We had lived in our house for 35 years and I thought it would be traumatic to move, but we have been fine and still live in the same area.

Absolutely! A short statement that folk can understand and empathise with you. When I was able to walk without sticks people were under the impression that everything was tickets boo. Little did they know the struggle I was still having. As I looked ok, ergo I was ok.
