Hello everyone!

I hope you are doing well!

Dealing with menopause can be unexpectedly challenging both physically and mentally. One of the conditions that can be associated with menopause is osteoporosis.

Hormones, notably oestrogen, play a role in the increased risk of osteoporosis in women following menopause. Your bones are shielded by oestrogen. Your oestrogen levels decrease as you approach menopause. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), this drop in oestrogen may occasionally result in bone loss.

Menopausal women are also more likely to develop osteoporosis due to inadequate mineral intake, which supports the body's ability to retain strong bones.

What do you think? Did your menopause cause any medical conditions? What was this transformation period like for you?

Take care,

Polina from the Carenity team

I have had epilepsy for almost 50 years and had a full hysterectomy in my 30s. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis and osteopenia in 2018, and am on Risedronate Sodium. I was also on HRT (hormone replacement therapy) for several years and was told in 2018 that this had to be stopped also due to osteoporosis. Many AEDs (anti-epilepsy drugs) cause bone loss and thinning, one of which is Phenytoin which I have been on for over 35 years. I still take this today. I will be asking my doctor for a follow-up Dexa scan later this year to see whether my levels have changed.
