Medication indications

AVONEX 30 micrograms/0.5 ml solution for injection.

AVONEX is indicated for the treatment of

• Patients diagnosed with relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS). In clinical trials, this was characterised by two or more acute exacerbations (relapses) in the previous three-years without evidence of continuous progression between relapses; AVONEX slows the progression of disability and decreases the frequency of relapses.

• Patients with a single demyelinating event with an active inflammatory process, if it is severe enough to warrant treatment with intravenous corticosteroids, if alternative diagnoses have been excluded, and if they are determined to be at high risk of developing clinically definite multiple sclerosis.

AVONEX should be discontinued in patients who develop progressive MS.

I’m not happy administrating this treatment due to the anxiety I experience using the injection pen. The pen is mechanical and can be temperamental so when pressing the button to engage the needle, this can sometimes be a shock when it clicks into position, making my reaction to jump and move the pens needle whilst inserted in my thighs muscle causing bleeding and bruising. I also have never overcome the following flu like symptoms afterwards. I experience bad headaches and dizziness. My ability to think clearly for 24hrs is seriously effected, so I am unable to work the following day. Luckily this is only once a week.
