Hi @Pinkypig,
Thank you for sharing something so deeply personal. I’m so sorry about your husband’s passing. Spending your first Christmas without him must feel incredibly heavy, and wanting to be alone this year makes a lot of sense. Sometimes, well-meaning invitations can feel overwhelming, like they’re trying to fill a space that can’t be filled. Grief has its own rhythm, and it’s okay to want quiet. It’s okay to say no. And it’s okay if what you need this Christmas is simply to be with your memories, in your own way.
Your message might have gone unseen when you first posted, but I want to take a moment to acknowledge it and you. To anyone else who might be feeling this too:
💬 Have you ever chosen solitude during festive times?

You’re not alone in needing space, Pinkypig. Thank you for your honesty, it opens the door for others to feel less alone, too.

@Somya.P No I have never wanted to be alone at Christmas nor have I ever been.
When my mum died, it was 3 weeks before the event and my birthday is on 20th; we were grief stricken as a family, my mum always made Christmas and birthdays so magical. We did everything she did, I even made the cake and pudding from her recipes; then we toasted her with champagne. before we ate. That became tradition and then when my dad died on Twelfth Night 9 years later, we began toasting with a Bucks Fizz (Mimosa to our American friends!) before we ate. I also buy a bunch of flowers for them both, displaying them in our living room, in one of Mum's vases.
Are there tears still, even after 24 and 15 years respectively? Yes, of course there are, but there is more laughter and we smile more, remembering the happy years ewe spent as a family.

@Somya.P i have chosen to be alone at Christmas, but that was a long time ago. because i didnt want to be with a friends family and her mum dominating everything
now prefer to be among company at this time of year , i recall when i had to isolate for 16 weeks during covid and it made me appreciate being with others, i was lucky as one of my nieghbours made me a christmas dinner and brought it across , her daughter and kids brought me new years day dinner and a lovely decorated glass of sparkling wine, it was magical but it does make up for the loneliness , it been over 30 years now since my wife went to heaven and the lonliness goes on forever, because no mater how much you are with other, when you close your door it only you inside, to me nothing makes up for being among someone who you are sharing affection with especially at Christmas and other special times . x only you can decide when you need to be alone sending virtual hugs x singing poet mr chipps
