@Martha Wow! If that's true, then you need to make a complaint to the practice manager! I have several health issues that are checked annually at the GP surgery, even during Covid I was given a thorough examination, bloods and urine testing done.

My doctor is 2 short bus trips away. Due to Covid it has been difficult to see him when required. There are 2 or 3 other doctors in our practice, but they are all pressurised and overworked. One has to make a call, and request a call back from the doctor. If urgent I have had no trouble making an appointment. Usual blood tests etc are more difficult and one has to wait for a later appointment in a week or two.

@lesmal That is appalling. I would find that difficult as I have Arthritis and my balance is not good. If you have a good doctor at the end of the journey it helps but if you are going to a doctor who is rushing you as I have encountered since they started These health Clinics, then I suggest perhaps you think hard about changing your GP. I do appreciate it is hard , I am 71 now and the whole health system seems to be 'broken ' and money centred.

@Fran999 Did you have the operation ? It is scandalous and here in Ireland there are people waiting for neurological surgery for the same amount of time.
If you ask you Doctor, there is a scheme where you can travel to another country to have the operation done. Personally I am too nervous to do this but here in Ireland I can seemingly go to Uk, London and that is where I was born. I hope you got sorted.

Hello, I live in a semi "jungle" area in North Bali and to get to a specialist is an 8 hour drive through mountains during the monsoon season. I can't sit for long and have been advised to get a painkilling injection before I depart. On top of that, I would have to wait at the hospital while the specialist sees other patients who line up for maybe 2 hours. This means I would have to get a hotel and sleep over. My daughter, who is my carer would also have to cope and also my driver would have to find accommodation and food there. Of course I would have to find the money for all this, expensive all round. In some ways you are so lucky over there, but still suffering. I wish I could heal the World. Hugs G

When I read other's comments, I realise I am very lucky to have a good, caring doctor.
I have many health issues, and my doctor understands them well. I could find a doctor closer to where we stay, but have received fantastic treatment from my GP in the last 4 years.
I wish I could say the same about my Neurologist after my last episode in hospital.

For the past several years since my Health Centre centralised, we were supposed to see a GP sooner but No, still wait 2 weeks but that was ok, as long as you see one.
After the COVID restrictions, you cannot see a GP at all and if serious you have to dial 111 or Walk In.
Unlike hospitals, Dentists and Opticians, I'm very disappointed that GPs are paid well but are too scared to see patients.
Now you have to take a photo of your symptoms and send it to the practice through your NHS App.
General Practice is not the same anymore, and I feel we are expected to put up until our symptoms become a medical emergency. This has been the case in my experience and my father's who is very ill with Diabetes and Heart failure.
I no longer have confidence in General Practice, but just speaking from my experience.
Others might have a better experience and I hope I have not broken any rules in giving a rather blunt opinion here.
If so, I will refrain from commenting in future.

Our Gap's are on the doorstep. There are some in my town that are asking patients to find another GP, so yes I think something needs to be done before more doctors leave. I haven't seen a doctor for over three years because of COVID, but we have very good nurses and an advanced nurse practitioner who is wonderful, don't know what I would have done without her. I had a phone appointment with a GP but he never rang and I was in so much pain, the surgery spoke to the nurse and she rang me and gave me some medication which helped a great deal. The nurse rang me a few days later to see how I was, I was so grateful for her help.

Hi everyone,
How are you today?
According to the British Medical Association there are currently 2.8 doctors per 1,000 people in England - while the average in comparable EU countries is 3.7 In order to meet that 3.7 average, the NHS would need to recruit nearly 50,000 doctors!
Combined with the growth and aging of the UK population, this could further deepen the shortage doctors and specialists across the UK.
What about you? Do you have trouble getting appointments to see a doctor or specialist? How far do you have to travel to see your doctor or specialist? How long do you typically wait for an appointment?
