Hello everyone,

If you haven’t already seen in the news, many countries in Europe and elsewhere in the world are starting to discuss or put measures in place to end the COVID-19 lockdown.

In his address last night, the Prime Minister Johnson announced an easing of restrictions regarding the lockdown rather than simply ending it.

The Government has established five tests that will have to be met before considering an end to the lockdown:

  • Ensuring that the NHS has sufficient capacity
  • A sustained and consistent fall in the daily mortality rate
  • Reliable data showing a decreasing rate of infection
  • Adequate supplies of tests and PPE for demand
  • No risk of a second peak of the virus

In addition, a new COVID Alert System, determined by the R number (the rate of COVID infection) and the number of Coronavirus cases, has been put in place to indicate how strict social distancing measures must be. It includes five alert levels, Level 1 meaning COVID-19 is no longer present in the UK and Level 5 meaning a critical material risk of overwhelming the NHS.

Starting Wednesday, people in England who "can't work from home" will be encouraged to return to work, but should avoid public transport if possible. From this date people in England will also be able to spend more time outdoors for leisure, including unlimited outdoor exercise, sport, or sun in parks. The PM also indicated that starting June 1, England may be in a place to reopen primary schools, shops and nurseries in phases, and hopes that some public places (including restaurants, cinemas and places of worship) may reopen starting July 1.

The Welsh, Scottish, and Northern Ireland governments have indicated that they will not be following with the June 1 date for primary schools. Decisions are awaited regarding the opening of shops and other businesses.

What do you think about this easing of restrictions? Is it too early? What do you think the impact will be on those who are extremely vulnerable or at risk? Do have any questions? Have you had any further information from your GP or medical team?

Feel free to share your thoughts and questions below!

Take care,

Courtney

@Courtney_J Thank you for this! I felt rather daft yesterday watching the announcement, it felt contradictory to me! One second he said to stay home, the next to go out! At least this clears it up a bit for me. I wonder if they'll change their minds before June 1, it feels a bit early to me.

Boris being timid again it is time to get Britain back to work but continue to protect the vulnerable. So I will continue to isolate but that could be at my static caravan in Norfolk as well as my home. It is time for the government to treat us as adults, we all know our individual needs and how to be safe.

I live in Scotland and am on the "at risk" list with a 12 week self-isolation. Fortunately I live on an island in Orkney where the two shops operate an order via email system and they will deliver free of charge.

It’s far too early.  The vague statements are designed solely to abdicate responsibility for the appalling incompetence and failure to prepare by this government- they were told by the virologists to stockpile and prepare years ago.

It is still the thinning of the herd of non taxpayers.

Profits before people - and their own arses being covered and those of their cronies.

Blatantly obvious and treating the populace as if we’re stupid.  Safe in the knowledge they’re in power until May 2024....

England voted for this - we got the government we deserve.

Yes I'm worried, I worked along side other people and we work with the NHS. I'm worried that I will get the virus off one or the other.

I was down graded from extremely vulnerable to just vulnerable so in theory no longer need to shield. However I will still be self isolating because I think that the advice is ill thought out and deliberately open to different interpretation. I can't help but feel that like the whole business from the start it has beed a reactive rather than a proactive approach. It is almost like he is saying well people are already going out, we can't control them so we might as well give in to them. Schools shouldn't be going back as kids don't understand about self distancing.

On a positive note I have now seen my new granddaughter Raven Lavender born on 8th April be it through a car window. My son had also been able to go back to work.

I agree with every one. yes, it is far to early to ease the lock down. Countries that have eased the lock down have had a 2nd wave. I have no intention of going out of the house. I have a long drive and a big front and back garden to exercise in. My husband is in the category of extremely vulnerable, who are advised to stay in even after 4th July. So yes, we are most definitely staying in and taking no chances. Other countries are handing out masks on the railway stations, in the street, in the airport, but Briton has not even attempted to do that

I have just been downgraded from extremely vulnerable to vulnerable, but I'm still not sure of exactly what i can do or indeed can't do- confusion reigns supreme as ever!

The only difference that relaxing of restrictions has made to me personally is to allow an additional dog walk. I do think that the approach for a cautious reawakening is the correct one, people do need to start to get back to work, providing it's safe for them to do so.

I'm in the fortunate position that I'm retired so will continue to stay home and avoid contact, not because I'm fearful but because I believe it's the right thing to do. My other half is a key worker and so is exposed to the risk of the virus, I'd hate to think that I'd unwittingly passed it on so I'll stay away.
