Hello everyone,

If you haven’t already seen in the news, many countries in Europe and elsewhere in the world are starting to discuss or put measures in place to end the COVID-19 lockdown.

In his address last night, the Prime Minister Johnson announced an easing of restrictions regarding the lockdown rather than simply ending it.

The Government has established five tests that will have to be met before considering an end to the lockdown:

  • Ensuring that the NHS has sufficient capacity
  • A sustained and consistent fall in the daily mortality rate
  • Reliable data showing a decreasing rate of infection
  • Adequate supplies of tests and PPE for demand
  • No risk of a second peak of the virus

In addition, a new COVID Alert System, determined by the R number (the rate of COVID infection) and the number of Coronavirus cases, has been put in place to indicate how strict social distancing measures must be. It includes five alert levels, Level 1 meaning COVID-19 is no longer present in the UK and Level 5 meaning a critical material risk of overwhelming the NHS.

Starting Wednesday, people in England who "can't work from home" will be encouraged to return to work, but should avoid public transport if possible. From this date people in England will also be able to spend more time outdoors for leisure, including unlimited outdoor exercise, sport, or sun in parks. The PM also indicated that starting June 1, England may be in a place to reopen primary schools, shops and nurseries in phases, and hopes that some public places (including restaurants, cinemas and places of worship) may reopen starting July 1.

The Welsh, Scottish, and Northern Ireland governments have indicated that they will not be following with the June 1 date for primary schools. Decisions are awaited regarding the opening of shops and other businesses.

What do you think about this easing of restrictions? Is it too early? What do you think the impact will be on those who are extremely vulnerable or at risk? Do have any questions? Have you had any further information from your GP or medical team?

Feel free to share your thoughts and questions below!

Take care,

Courtney

I am worried about more people out and about and the fact that the virus spread will more than likely increase. I am 59 and have diabetes, high blood pressure and a BMI of 34 but unfortunately I am not in the shielding list. I work for NHS in a prison so have had to continue going to work. It’s a very difficult environment at the best of times but with the added fear of COVID 19 I am really struggling to cope. But what can I do? I asked my manager if I could work from home but was told no. My partner also has diabetes, high blood pressure and high BMI and also Huntington’s disease. I am very frightened of bringing the virus home and infecting him!

I personally am highly at risk and vulnerable as I have COPD - my husband works in a care home and I personally think this to too much too quick... I am very afraid this is going to end up with another spike and don't know how I am going to be affected directly... I am afraid for my own health and well being

It would seem that whether one is designated as extremely or just moderately vulnerable is a post code lottery. Either way I think it is necessary to consider whether one could cope with being extremely unwell, depending on the severity of your MS and your circumstances, e.g do you have any support at home. If not then I would think that self isolation needs to be continued either until there is a treatment or vaccine.

I felt it should of been a all of UK approach!

I feel we need to start to ease out of lockdown, protecting the vunerable!

We should be allowed to visit family and friends in their garden while socially distancing. Human contact is important.

If people have underlying conditions they should be risk assessed and put in a low risk area. The high risk groups should be allowed to self isolate.

I think testing is the way forward to know who is Covid 19 free & who we can visit not visit.

Best wishes

Claire 😊

I broke my ankle one week into lockdown. Was in hospital overnight and been back once for check up. Still well having been in an environment with the virus being treated.

I am concerned at the permission to travel as far as you can providing you can return home. I live in South west and am deeply concerned having been in lock down we will be inundated with visitors now. I wonder what infections rate will be in a few weeks time

i feel......... i'm being again punished, im widowed live alone and have a spinal cord injury, going paralysed, first insult was im not considered "vulnerable" or "at risk" even though my injury is in my neck which causes breathing problems. i feel "expendable" im 63 yrs old. and now..... nursery workers will be allowed to cuddle and hug babies and toddlers in their care, but im not allowed to see any of my family or hug my grandkids, its almost 3 months now and i feel my mental health is beginning to suffer, and also that of my grandkids, today (because its wednesday) i was allowed to drive to my sons to put my daughter in laws birthday cards through their lertterbox and talk via a closed window, my grandkids were sobbing, i was sobbing. its so cruel! oh and btw, if they do ever do any joined up thinking......... i havent been able to shop much because i cannot stand for too long and the queues intro shops are horrendous, and because im not deemed other than joe bloggs, i suffer.

I live in wales so we are still in lock down  I do have concerns and think the ban is being risen to early. People will go to the beach. Parks. In vast amounts how do you ensure they will keep their distance  people was  not listening before so they won’t listen now. As they can use their cars to get some where to go walking  how can we be sure they won’t come to wales just to walk the mountains or beaches we can’t prove they don’t live here.iv not been out for 8 weeks as I had letters to stay at home  so I get really angry when I hear  people  coming over the bridge for stupid reasons  so I believe Boris is lifting parts to early  I have much respect for the man but this is an invisible war and being to early will start another wave.
