Hi everyone, how are you doing today? 💬

Some of us can’t fall asleep without a fan humming, a podcast playing, or the TV softly on in the background. Sound familiar?

There are many reasons people depend on background noise to sleep, it could be to block out other disturbing sounds (like traffic or snoring), to ease anxiety in silence, or simply because it’s a habit formed over time. But while it can help some drift off, sleep experts say constant noise might affect sleep quality and overall health.

🎧 So, let’s talk:

Do you rely on noise to fall asleep? What kind (white noise, music, TV, etc.)?

Have you ever tried sleeping in silence? How did it go?

Have you found ways to fall asleep without background noise?

What helps you wind down at bedtime?

I listen to led zeppelin 4 every night and read my kindle for about an hour, led zeppelin helps me relax and reading helps tire me out. I'm not the best of sleepers, never have been due to asthma all my life and 40 years of shift work really screwed my sleep pattern up. I sleep better now but rarely sleep longer than 2 1/2 hrs at a stretch mostly about 1 1/2 hrs then I'm up to the loo for the first but not the last time during the night.

I listen to a book through Audible and that helps me get to sleep. My mum's the same, but she listens to a tv. I remember being able to get to sleep without needing noise, but that was when I was much younger.

Now, if I struggle actually getting to sleep, I do my nighttime routine again, and maybe take an antihistamine (it's used in sleeping tablets). The only way I can get to sleep with no noise is when I'm drunk, but then I need to wake up to use the toilet more!

I think this habit has been passed down since the start of the humanrace and before, as there's always been someone or something awake, making noise at night to protect the group. Be it them walking around, the wood of a fire crackling, or other people's sounds like snoring or moving in their sleep.

I fall asleep while watching television day or night if I wake up early hours I turn off television and turn on BBC sounds to radio 4 extra or radio 4 because concentrating on talking can send me to sleep

I've tried everything to fall asleep but since having gone through breast cancer and then having type 2 diabetes I am so scared to close my eyes just incase I don't wake up again having so many life threatening illnesses and having tinnitus I just can't sleep, I can fall asleep in my reclining chair, in the day time, but as soon as I go to bed, I'm wide awake, I lay there then around early hrs in the morning I finally drop off.
