Hi @hayley64,

Thanks for this interesting topic!

I advise you to also create this discussion in a group dedicated to Depression, as you can get more feedback there. wink.png

Kind regards,

Margarita

We cannot get St. Johns Wort here in Ireland, without a prescription. Valarian is good - tea, tincture or capsule. Chamomile tea. Cut down on coffee and alcohol. Can't beat a good walk - or so lm told.

5htp (5-hydroxytryptophane), is really good for milder or situational depression, its not the best for severe or long-term depression.

it works on raising your own serotonin levels rather than synthetically , it belongs to the Amino acid family.

I took it for many years but had to stop it and go on Antidepressants as the 5 htp wasn't working anymore 'Haho'.

you can order it from Amazon or get it from Holland and Barrett, its not cheap, £15

whatever you do DO NOT TAKE WITH ANY OTHER SSRI'S, you end up with serotonin syndrome

? hope that helps

I agree with Jackabeens .... I have started serotonin been on it for 6 months now, have seen a difference in my mood, almost back to my daft self laughing and joking about stuff. Dealing with my fatigue and pain in the whole of my body really got me down. I do recommend this to try. 5 htp. I buy from Dolphin fitness site online.

hope this helps

I live alone, with no one to help or support me. Depression was really bad and was waking up after 2 hours sleep, often in tears. With a long list of medical conditions the future looked very bleak and I started to think euthanasia.

I joined an exercise class for my breathing on my Doctors recommendation - I have COPD. To begin with I was very quiet and withdrawn, everyone thought I was stand offish. The instructor persuaded me to join her aqua class. Suddenly I was doing things. There were a lot of days when I just wanted to hibernate, but I made myself go. Now we are a group, if some one does not attend others phone to see if you are all right. I now go on trips with a local community care group, to begin with I was often on my own and that is the hard part, but over time I have made friends and am included in things.

I changed my diet, going almost grain free. That for me, has helped with almost everything. Though I still do not sleep well.

It is really hard to make yourself do anything when the black mood is on you. I did little things to begin with and over time felt better. I still get occasional black days, but now I know they will pass.
