Hello everyone, hope you’re doing well!

I wanted to bring up a new NHS plan that's been making headlines, and get your take on it.

Starting soon, NHS staff in England will visit people at home to carry out free health checks. The goal? To spot early signs of heart disease, diabetes, kidney problems, and stroke risk, particularly in people aged 40 to 74 who don’t regularly see their GP.

These visits may include blood pressure and cholesterol checks, help with booking follow-up appointments, and even support for managing weight, alcohol intake, or quitting smoking, all delivered at home.

This comes as part of a wider plan to reduce preventable illnesses and hospital admissions, especially in underserved areas where people are less likely to access care proactively.

💬 We’d love to hear your thoughts:

Have you ever skipped a health check because of inconvenience or anxiety?

Would you welcome a visit from a health worker offering these services?

What would make this feel safe, helpful, or supportive for you?

As my wife was connected 20 years ago to telehealth, a monitoring service due to her 3 heart attacks. I must admit such a service could easily be brought in to monitor us golden oldies as a prevention method of serious illness. With new tech this could easily be done but relying on the use of a health professional/district nurse may could with a big cost and repeated visits quite expensive. But it has to be said us golden oldies dominate the NHS with our health issues late in life. This all sounds expensive but with remote monitoring might be a cheaper option, but all sounds interesting. Perhaps men would benefit most as even in old age they don't attend their GPs etc. allowing serious issues to dominate, costing the NHS more!

Would definitely like to see this happen as it would definitely help people that have underlining illnesses and then you would definitely know if your illnesses are getting any worse then maybe you would get the care and treatment you would be entitled to instead of just not bothering as the older you get you don't get the same help as you do when you are young

I don't see this happening in Northern Ireland as NHS, doctors and staff are so backlogged with waiting lists and lack of appointments. It would be a good service but lack of funding and nurses/staff also would not make it worthwhile.

@lesmal Well us golden oldies require the NHS more than any other period in life. If they can get some basic trained staff, taking the basic stats it may be cheaper than having us in A&E with bigger problems. We tend to live with our health issues rather than seek help so in the long run it might prove a big saving. I do think a lot of monitoring can be done with remote devices and AI to identify possible issues!

@robjmckinney Just to get blood tests done here at our practice takes 3 weeks never mind seeing the doctor. I agree with your comments though if enough interest was shown and more organisation could be done. We have been warned already that our practice is changing systems in September so more chaos coming.
