Good morning, everyone,

Many studies suggest that good sleep has a key role to play in our health. Unfortunately, some chronic diseases can make it difficult to get to sleep.

Does your illness affect your sleep? Do you have any tips for better sleep? Do you use sleeping pills or do you turn to natural methods? Have you set up a ritual to fall asleep calmly?

Share here your advice and questions about sleep, a precious asset!

Sleep for the most part is not an issue but getting comfortable for both my wife and myself. One of my wife's issues is sleep apnea where she is connected to her machine, which can be noisy at times for me. She has little problems sleeping and can sleep most of the night and day if she had a choice, getting her up is an issue. But with her restless leg and many other issues she can have an odd sleepless night. Pain in her legs she uses an Ibrofen gel not ideal as this conflicts with several of her conditions like Asthma etc. but it does give her relief.

I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in at least 20 years. Sometimes I cannot get to sleep and other nights I can’t stay asleep. I have had amitriptilene for the last probably 11 years been on highest dose possible, still not good. I have tried many different things to improve the situation but nothing makes a difference.

I don't have trouble falling asleep. I massage the balls of my each foot for 60 seconds. That certainly helps me fall asleep quickly. Also when I close my eyes and settle down to sleep, i start with my feet, saying, "souls of my feet relax" and work upwards to each part of the body. By the time i come to my thighs, I am usually asleep. Also having Magnesium, B Vitamins and Omega 3 with evening meals, helps one sleep better. I used to take them in the morning with my breakfast till i read a report from the Nutritionist and changed them to evening. It certainly has made a difference.

Before i developed Auto immune disease, I used to sleep really well. With Polymyalgia and  Temporal Areterits Rheumatica I am on high doses of Steroid and have to have them for 2 years. That is causing me to have several side effects, mainly severe unbearable headaches and sleep disturbances at night. Which makes me very tired during the day, but I still carry on with my daily activities. I just hope and pray that my body gets used to the side effects and they ware off. I am also on Healthy You Programme with Weight watchers for Pre Diabetics and following instruction of drinking 1.7 lit of water, and water means water and not other fluids included in that. Which plays a major part in frequent visits to the loo during the night, further disturbing my night sleep

I haven't had good sleep for years, even as a young teenager I didn't sleep well, during my working life ( mostly on shift work ) I was lucky if I got 6 hours sleep a night got by on 4 or less most nights and when I was on Nightshift it was horrendous, but I got used to it. Now I'm retired and have a lot of health problems I catnap most nights, I have about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs then I'm awake and at the loo then maybe another 1 hour or 2 and it's probably like that until 7 when my alarm goes off for my first tablets of the day.

I have bouts of insomnia was on sleeping tablets for 6  years, before I was taken off them, Sleeping tablets are only supposed to be a temporary measure max of 6 weeks, and can end up destroying the body's ability to make the chemicals to help you sleep. When I stopped taking the sleeping tablets had no sleep for 3 days, but luckily it was around Christmas time and I had time off work. I do not drink tea or coffee after 6 p.m. Go to bet at the same time and get up at the same time. Use my laptop to listen to audio radio plays and hopefully drift off for 2 hours ,When wake up Listen to some more of the play. In the summertime, I would get up at 4 or 5 a.m.to do some work and have a nap later. Then for a few weeks, I can sleep 5 or  6 hours but will go back to broken sleep after that. My doctor told me that if got no sleep for 3 or 4 nights to get help  straight away
