Hello everyone,

I hope you're doing well. emoticon bashful

As the discussions continue on the end of the COVID-19 lockdown and social distancing measures, you may have some questions about the use of protective face masks.

We've made a little guide to help us all learn how to properly use and wear a mask! Take a look at it below!

Have you been able to obtain any masks for you and your loved ones? Where did you find them? Do you currently or are you planning on using them every time you go out?

Feel free to share with us here! We're here to help on another, especially in this time of public health crisis.

Take care,

Courtney

@Courtney_J Oh this is lovely as well! I couldn't get my hands on any masks myself, so I've made them more myself and my family. I wear them every time I go out and I probably will continue to in the coming weeks just to be safe.

@Courtney_J Thank you for this! I hadn't thought about touching the mask! It seems so obvious now that I think of it, how silly of me!

I went to Brussels for a cancer meeting at the end of Feb/March when virus was in Italy/Spain but we still had free movement.  My partner was very nervous for me and gave me two masks he would use for industrial protection from fine particles (with a filtered vent on the front).  I didn't wear them then as nobody was doing anything - at airports, flights, hotels, shopping malls etc.  However yesterday I had a face to face appointment as an outpatient at my local hospital and he was probably more anxious so I took them in my bag.  I had to have a chest x-ray and blood tests and wore the mask once inside the hospital. I had to walk up two flights of stairs to reach where they were seeing outpatients (very few) but by the time I reached there, I was so hot and breathless I was worried that if anyone took my temperature, I'd fail whatever screening might be.  V. Uncomfortable and had to tighten elastic so it was inevitable that I had to touch it. I saw all staff including cleaners wearing the types that looped over the ears (surgical types) but as I work in the NHS don't want to take such stuff away from frontline staff and the evidence is that the fabric ones offer little protection.  Having a respiratory problem, I found it stifling and wonder whether this 'blanket' approach or social pressure to wear one may result in people with respiratory conditions actually getting into more difficulty than if they went without.  I've been walking in the open air (social distancing rules) each day (cleaner air) with no breathing problems at all. just a thought....

Regret I was unable to obtain any masks locally, i.e. from the local supermarkets or from pharmacies here. Initially, just as COVID-10 started there was a total 'sell out' of masks and they were nowhere to be found!

The tips above are helpful but I didn't realise either that the mask shouldn't be touched by your hands; this of course makes sense now.

What makes me laugh here, is that those wearing masks don't wear 'blue' sanitised gloves, so where's the logic of covering your mouth, when your hands aren't covered? I am in a block of 30 apartments; one day our Manager comes in with a mask, the next day she doesn't so where's the common sense behind this, and why bother to wear one?  We also have a laundry and are instructed to sanitise the washing machine/tumble dryer before and after use, but not everyone bothers to do this; as long as their washing is done is their thoughts!

When visiting our store close by, very few people wear a mask; in fact hardly any at all. We all abide by the rules of self-distancing and stand in the queue as required, waiting for the store manager to let us in one by one. One comes in, one goes out which is the way to do it.

I don't see the point of wearing a mask if not done regularly and if so, then one's hands must also be covered. If putting on a new one daily, one wonders how many one must order!

My thoughts are that it is imperative for carers and NHS to wear, but again due to shortage of supply how can they stay healthy and safe, especially when there's a shortage of hospital gowns too!

We haven't been able to buy any face masks. Plus I can't wear anything that covers my nose and mouth as I have asthma and also because I hate things that covers my nose and mouth.

I ordered 50 face masks on 7th April on Amazon for £12.00. Unfortunately it did not arrive within 4 weeks by 5th May, so I have asked for a refund.

Apparently my tracker on Amazon says my order could be lost,  despite giving clear address.

On the plus side I ordered for £7 on Wowcher pack of 5 face masks, and these arrived in 2 weeks.

Although I am rather apprehensive with contracting the virus,  I have not used the mask much as it's effectiveness is not supported by Scientists.

Personally, using a mask is better safe than sorry.

I am very annoyed with the way the government have handled this crisis.

We all will suffer, not them. I apologise for sounding political.

I suffer from epilepsy since birth and have become very anxious since losing my job and recent global events.

I think wearing face masks are more problematic than they are worth as they will trap more germs around your nose and mouth and you will be breathing these in, also it will trap any thing in the atmosphere as well I personally wont be wearing one unless told to on public transport which I can see their point on this one as every one will be close together but otherwise they tell us it's harder to get the virus outside I will do without
