Hi all, I am new here, and just stumbled across this thread. Asthma is a right royal pain at times, and I look forward to the day when some breakthrough develops in it's treatment or better still a cure!!! In my case, I suffered asthma as a child which went away but returned with a vengeance in adulthood. Mine was quite well managed until 2012, when I was hospitalised with bilateral pulmonary embolisms and since then my lungs have become hyper sensitive and my asthma severe. The main thing blighting my life at present is that my lungs are now totally intolerant of strong smells, but particularly designer perfumes and aftershaves, and where I live, practically everyone is plastered in gallons of the stuff! The result of this is that every time I venture outside, I am having asthma attacks from what I am forced to inhale constantly. I have to over use my blue inhaler outside but it cannot get the chance to work properly, as I keep getting assaulted by more strong over powering scents before my reliever gets the opportunity to do it's job. It is really messing my life up at the moment, as I love the outdoor life, but have to be stuck indoors most of the time or get ill. I feel that the issue of strong perfume pollution and the affects on respiratory patients need to be brought more to the fore in the UK. In America, this problem is taken as seriously as smoke pollution, and there are people campaigning about it for the right to breathe clean air in public places. Really think people need educating on this issue as it seems worse (at least for me) than breathing second hand smoke.

Hi., It was 1952 and I was 5 years old at the time when I first had any symptoms while on holiday hop-picking with my mum and dad in Kent, England UK. The Dr thought I was allergic to straw or the hops. I was taken to hospital and that's where I stayed for the rest of the holiday. To cut a long story short. Back home I live in England I had several attacks and saw different Drs and was then sent to Great Ormond Street Hospital for sick children where I had tests done and was diagnosed with Asthma January 1952 and was sent away to a convalescent home for sick children in Clacton-On-Sea in Essex where I stayed for 1 year and I was sent to the hospital several times from the home to and spent a lot of time in the sick dormatory< at the convalescent home too. I was always in and out of the local hospital with several Asthma Attacks most of my childhood. My medication then was Rybarvin which was used with one of them old fashioned black pumps. The medication wasn't good in those days and didn't help much. I lost most of my schooling days being ill all of the time through my childhood. I have had several medications since child hood. I am now on Ventolin Accuhaler 250 and Seretide Accuhaler 500 for my Asthma. I have prednisolone steroids when needed. Steroids have been a God send for me. I think without them I don't think I would be around today especially with all the pollution and smoke around. I stay in-doors a lot and only go out if I have to. I used to be more ill when people used to smoke around me which caused me all sorts of problems but, since no-one smokes near me any more I haven't been so bad.

I am allergic to certain smells too, like some plants, cut grass and flowers, especially wall flowers and geraniums , musky perfumes all of which I like but they don't like me lol, Deodorants and some cleaning fluids and more that I can't think of right now!

Hi, was diagnosed some months ago after a long illness which lasted for months - severe repetitive bronchitis.

I also started having problems breathing while I was playing basketball (in between my bronchitis outbreaks). So I thought there was something wrong with me and I went to see my doctor who after some tests confirmed that I had adult-onset ashtma.
