Hello everyone,

I hope you are doing good!

I wanted to ask what is the best piece of advice you have received from your therapist? Although therapists usually do not give straight advice, they can help you navigate your emotions better.

Therefore I was hoping today we could share what was the most important thing you have learned in therapy?

@robjmckinney @Rolandv111 @lesmal @mr chipps @Tigger.co.uk @Marv61 @whitecross1955 @NannieAnn @Pippadog @BrianM @annafielding @richard0804 @mjteddy @Sonicbear

Take care,

Polina from the Carenity team

I have not been seen by an individual therapist.

For my Fibromyalgia I attended a 3week course followed by a 6-month and 12-month review. It involved a Psychiatrist, Rheumatoid Consultant, Physiotherapist, Occupational therapist and specialist nurse. We covered the possible triggers of the condition, how to pace one self which is very important, when an achievement was made to treat yourself, meditation, a discussion about medication. Physio group and hydrotherapy and how to cope at home with daily living. This course was very good, at the end of 12 months I no longer attended the hospital outpatient clinic, the course was self-management, any concerns were to be directed to the general practitioner. I must say initially I felt they didn't know what to do with Fibromyalgia patients, I felt insecure but now feel comfortable with it.

Best news of got from the therapist was one I hired for my grandchild, advising me no sexual abuse had taken place. Worked for me, as I no longer had to take the terrible abuse/advice from social services as they were lying to me all along. Still it was important information that we could use in court and stop the lies, we won the custody case preventing them taking our grandchild into the broken care system. I have to say this was the appalling strain on our mental health as both parents tried to commit suicide and there was no real help for us. But still we won against the appalling broken state system!

@Polina.K ... Luckily I do not suffer from depression and am not under a therapist. My advice to others would be to seek someone you like and trust so you can share your personal issues.

Best advice or information I received from a psychotherapist , " we never know how much trauma we carry from our childhood into adulthood ,until we delve into our childhood " and I only remember some, as many years are blank ........." It has been said that time heals all wounds, I don't agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue, and the pain lessens, but is never gone. I have learnt in mental health group is to talk to people I don't feel alone and therapist suggested walking which I do regularly sitting by water helps and in a quiet place listening to birds singing and seeing my friends

I went for hypnosis once to try to help with my dystonia as I wanted to try and deal with some bad habits. The therapist told me that the brain doesn't know the difference between fact and fiction. Thats why visualisation is so powerful, the type that athletes use. (and why a scary film affects us so much even when we know it's not real) Apparently it's our intellect emotions and insticts that kick in and make sense of a situation. This has really stuck with me. If I am struggling with something I try my hardest to trick my brain into believing what I want it to!
