Hi, I've fallen in love with someone who has HIV, and we're finally going to have some time in the next weeks to spend time together. I don't know how to do this. The whole relationship, sex, the works. I know that he takes his medicine every day and he sees his doctor from time to time and has occasionally been in hospital for it. I love him very much but at the same time I don't want to get infected. I want to do the best I can to support him and be there for him. I talked to my GP and he made it sound like it wouldn't be possible for us to be together intimately. That can't be right can it?

I'd really appreciate any advice if you can spare it.

Thanks for reading xx
~Lovely

Hello Lovely

How wonderful to be falling in love!  I'm very happy for you!  But I suggest that you change your GP!! From what you write it sounds like the GP you consulted has not kept up to date with the latest information on HIV and really needs to be educated!  Nowadays the medication a HIV+ person takes manages the virus to the extent that it can no longer be detected within the body.  This doesn't mean the person has been cured, but that the level of virus is so low within the body that the testing machines cannot find it and that because there is so little of it that person can not infect an other person with HIV.  If your partner is what is known as 'undetectable' (and most HIV+ people in the UK are undetectable) it means that you can have an intimate relationship without fear of him infecting you. Enjoy your relationship fully!  You and he have every right to.  And do go back and tell that GP how wrong they were.

@Lovely I second all that @Roland‍ said! It sounds like your GP is behind in the times or is harbouring some prejudices. As for supporting your partner, you're already taking the right steps by trying to educate yourself. I'd say keep asking your questions, especially to him, be open and honest about your fears but also be ready to listen. And do have a word with your GP! That's unacceptable.

Hi lovely :)

Congrats :) life is beautiful when we fall in love :)

I'm a HIV person with a stable partner we never had any problem with intimacy as I take my meds everyday and I have no viral load in my blood stream, That GP seems a bit , out of the reality... As long as your partner has no viral load in his blood it's fine... There is no risk!!

I would have a word with that GP and probably make a complain! That's unacceptable!!!

<3 take care and be happy :) :) :) :)

Yes I agree with all of this, please do report that doctor, that is unacceptable! If your partner is taking his medicine and you're using the proper protection I don't think you have anything to worry about. xx
