i have had RA for over 30 years now & have learned to cope with it, as one needs to do. Recently I had a flare up and the only thing different in my diet was chilli peppers. I woke up during the night with severe pain in my shoulders wrists & hands, wrists & hands being quite swollen.

could chilli be the problem as I believe it is being generated as a benefit in dealing with RA.

Yes it's at my local Hospital.  I am lucky my to have the Consultant and Specialist Nurse that I email to let them know when I need help.  When it all went pear shaped a week ago I went and had my bloods taken came home emailed the nurse and asked.her to check them. That's what started the ball rolling. I have received an appointment to go and have a bone density scan at the end of November, so that's probably why they have me calcium tablets to take obviously the reading wasn't too good.

The trigger for flare ups must be different for people with ra, I've found over the last few months meat has given me bad reactions, any meat apart from chicken, it now limits my diet somewhat .if a change of life style limits my flare ups so be it . Talking to a fellow sufferer chocolate will start a flare up , she still eats chocs, WHY....

Hi I am new to the group just joined? I have being taking the old fashioned anti malaria drug to manage my RA and have being fine on it for a few years now but the last three weeks I seem to have a flare as hands feet and my shoulders ceased up three times and won't settle. Just wondering if I am starting to get the dreaded fibromyalgia as I hear it highly likely with this condition  but terrible muscle spasms in my shoulders with restricted movement. Has anyone had problems like this before.

Chilli, hot spicy food etc. Do not eat them as it stands to common sense they are going to inflame the body! I live Indian and Chinese food but it will aggravate the body.

I have been living with a flare for months now and only recently is it settling down, I am dairy free as when I first had symptoms the pain in my hands was unbearable, but I researched and read that dairy can cause more flares and pain, once I`d given up dairy the change was significant and although the pain didn`t disappear completely it was far less than it had been, I am now also gluten free and only when I`d cut these two things out did I begin to notice my body reacting to certain foods often within an hour or two. A month ago I began on the Paleo diet and fully intend to stay on it, since then my flare has been gradually dying down and I am hopeful of full recovery, when we start researching RA and possible causes there is a mountain of information about food allergies and reactions. So yes chilli could be a cause for your flare up.

I've read so much on this subject as we all have and I honestly am starting to wonder what can we really eat to keep our bodies pain free from this horrible disease? There is so much food that we eat every day that reacts to it! I'm thinking of going to a nutritionist who could give me a proper diet to stick to? I think they also test you for allergies which is specific to you.

And Chilli is one of the nightshades, these include peppers (bell, chilli etc), potatoes, tomatoes and eggplants and the nightshades can all cause inflammation.

@Annfoster59

Interesting as I am getting similar issues and I take the same drug as you which have being on for a few years with no issues until of late. Even the little bones at the base of my skull are affected and like you I seem to be ceasing up. I have being waiting to see the specialist for two and a half months and really struggling. I wonder if I am also getting fibromyalgia.

I hope your flare settles down and you feel more comfortable

Every RA patient is different - beef gives me flare ups.  I've even tried organic beef but it still caused a massive flare up.  Does anyone else share this with me?  I can eat lamb, pork, chicken and turkey but not beef.

I do love curries and spicy food doesn't affect me like beef does.
