Hello everyone,

How are you today? emoticon cute

You may have heard that people with diabetes are at a heightened risk for eye complications, such as cataracts, glaucoma and retinopathy. Fortunately, with regular checkups, you can keep an eye on your eye health, prevent progression of any eye conditions, and start treatment if needed.

Have you encountered any eye issues related to your diabets? How have you treated them? How often do you see your eye doctor?

I am Diabetic type 2 trying to prevent eye issues connected to my Diabetes I have yearly checks to identify any changes plus extra checks when buying new glasses. I am developing cataracts ?due to diabetes or older age. I have also dry eyes which I have to put eye drops in frequently daily, this is due to my Rheumatoid arthritis not diabetes.

Update to my eye care as a diabetic, I recently had pain in the eye/eyes my surgery suggested I should go to the hospital, I followed those instructions. I saw a GP at the hospital who couldn't see any particularly wrong suggested that should have an appointment with an optician. I saw the diabetic eye team followed by a Specsavers appointment a thorough examination was completed the cataract was getting worse but not ready for treatment. There was a new development of Macro degeneration otherwise no change in my eye sight. Waiting to see my GP.

@Pippadog My wife has not got diabetes but has cataracts and dry eye. She has her glasses changed every few months and was turned down for the cataract op. Since her last appointment her eyes have got much worse and Specsavers put her forward for ops but then again in my area there are large waiting lists. I as a diabetic have regular tests by the health authority but note I am not lloking after myself and developing issues with my feet. But I have noticed my eyes are fluctuating during the day so eye issues just round the corner, a diet is in order!

I am Type II diabetic and I have regular Retinal Screening at my local surgery, my eye prescriptions are checked when I go to the Optician for a check-up and new glasses, every year. My eyes are changing I am starting to develop cataracts in my right eye, the same as my Uncle did twenty years ago. I must follow the professionals with regard to caring for my eyes.

Your eyes are very precious you only get one pair so look after them.

I have had laser treatment in both eyes,but problems have returned and I am about to have my second injections into both eyes,then another lot in a months time.

Second input about my eyes, developed Blepharitis first in one eye then eventually In the other. Approximately 2 weeks ago I was experiencing pain in the eye, again first in one eye then the other. Prescribed eye ointment 3x daily for 5 days. I had to make an appointment with the Diabetic eye screening team which I am having tomorrow. One item I purchased was an eye bag which is warmed in the microwave and placed on the eyes for 10 minutes it’s very soothing and helps to spread the ointment evenly.

Hi a 3rd update of my eye care: attended specsavers for an eye test which was due, The optician carried out a very thorough eye examination and explained I had been experiencing pain in both eyes. After the examination he explained my cataract may need surgery in another 1-2years.The other condition that is developing slowly is macular degeneration he referred me to my GP. I saw my GP this week thought my eye pain was due to a cluster migraine, at this stage I am waiting for a head scan. I hope you are all keeping well and cool.

Hi I have type 1 diabetes I have my eyes screened every year and regular option tests. I attend the local eye clinic at the hospital. Over the years I’ve had cataracts removed over time I have developed Diabetic Macular disease at first the hospital was keeping a eye on it( Parton the punch). One day on a routine check up was told I needed injections in the eye I was horrified at the thought I said to the consultant when will this happen. He said now I was petrified ,I was taken shaking but they calmed me best they could .. I’m not going to say it was ok as it wasn’t but I thought it was this or lose my site eventually. I am now having injection equally to date I have had 8 lots last being last month.
Diabetes has a lot to answer to for it’s side effects I have quite a few ,at least nowadays things can be treated

Now I have progressed to early levels of cataracts so I have the lovely prospect of eye operations. My brother just had his operations on his cataracts and had a bad time with one eye, but had his stiches out so improving. My wife awaiting her cataract operations and on a long waiting list. I have had to ban her using her mobility scooter as she is having to many near misses but adapting reasonably well in the home. It is a worry for her carrying out domestic duties especially as we took on carrying for our grandchild due to metal issues of her parents. But my wife does not complain but gets on in her own little way, getting old is such fun as as always!
