People with diabetes across West Wiltshire are being urged to take part in a consultation on whether to restrict some items of equipment as part of a cost cutting exercise.
Diabetes UK has voiced concerns over the proposals and is calling on diabetes sufferers to give their view on the subject. NHS England is consulting on whether to advise Clinical Commissioning Groups, including Wiltshire, to restrict the prescription of some items, including some glucose testing strips for people with Type 2 diabetes and insulin pen needles. If the proposals become reality it would affect blood glucose testing strips costing more than £10 for 50 strips and reusable insulin pen needles costing more than £5 for 100 needles.
In it's consultation document, NHS England says the intention is not to de-prescribe these items but for Clinical Commissioning Groups to consider cheaper alternatives.
Lynne Merritt, 68, of the Warminster Diabetes Group said restricting some equipment could have serious consequences for some people who might not self manage their condition as well as they should.
It's false economy and could lead to kidney problems and multi-organ failures.
"People with diabetes will have to own their treatment and make sure they self-manage it properly"
Diabetes UK is urging people to give their views before the consultation period ends on February 28.

What a flippin' mouthful?
I know many people of all ages and backgrounds or on benefits will struggle if they have to pay for 'strips and needles'. They only just manage to live as it is with the price of food, fuel etc
What are your thoughts on this subject?
