Having had osteoarthritis since my mid twenties (runs in the family unfortunately), decreased disc spaces between L2-S1 (discovered after my back went into spasm) for 2-3 days and eventually being diagnosed with MS in 2013, really have found exercise very beneficial. I have been trying to perform exercises for my back pain most days, but sometimes "lapse", after being prescribed a course of physiotherapy and have always found these "stretching exercises" do make a difference even though these can often be rather initially painful. I have also started to attend a Neurotherapy Centre last week and will be attending my 2nd group physiotherapy class there tomorrow. Although I almost daily experience intercostal pain (muscles between the ribs) - frequently having a pain score of 8 (out of 10 max) and had this before my first session, literally felt "like a new woman" after the session. Please check with your GP, health care provider etc to make sure exercise will not make your medical condition worse but certainly with osteoarthritis and MS, it is usually recommended. Ann x

I have a new set of exercises from physio for my knee, but at the moment it is making it worse. I will prevail for a while, but the physiotherapist said if it made it worse to stop. I think I need to give it a fair chance.

Bikes, Pilates, Aqua Aerobics all help me (mainly knee). Hard at first, but by persevering - 5 times a week for 2.5 months now - it is making a very big difference. I had days when I bum shuffled down the stairs. I now walk down pretty normally.

Hi, I do Tai Chi regularly, or rather I'm learning it. It really helps to relax the muscles and your mind, it has helped build my muscle strength and mobility.

Hi Marina, where is the Pain, I have found swimming to be very good looses everything up and you can do a variety of different strokes so it is easy to find one that will suit your condition, most life guards will advise you, and it isn't as abrasive as some activities, I also go to the gym 3 times a week but only use the treadmill on an incline and no more than a fast walking pace, so no jolting to the body and rowing machine as i find it stretches out my back, and helps decompress my spine, which eases the pain.
Hope you find something that works for you x
