Hello everyone,

How are you today? emoticon cute

Though we can't hear it tick, our body has its own internal clock - the circadian rhythm. Our personal circadian rhythms, or "chronotypes" vary from person to person but may also run in families. The two main chronotypes are what we commonly refer to as "early birds", those who tend to go to bed and wake up early, and "night owls", those who tend stay up and wake up late.

If you'd like to learn more, don't hesitate to read our article: Can waking up early benefit our health?

What about you? Are you more of an early bird or a night owl? Has that changed as you've aged? Would like to be one more than the other? Have you ever tried to change your sleep cycle?

I am definitely a night owl and have been ever since I was born. My Mother told me that I kept her up every night, probably for at least my 1st year or 2 and 1 of her doctors (I was born in the US but have lived the majority of my 71 years in Lancashire/Cheshire) told her that I had "my nights and days mixed up" except no 'interventions' ever changed this! As a teenager I could sleep for elongated lengths of time but as I grew older, I seemed to naturally develop a more 'normal/acceptable sleep pattern, receiving between 7-8 hrs. Presently, my sleep pattern has "gone awry" which is probably due to having MS (for 44+ yrs) although I gratefully remain largely independent. I have increasingly & unintentionally, been recently falling asleep, while watching television, and this REALLY "throws a big spanner" in my best intentioned goal of establishing a better balance between getting enough sleep and never possessing enough energy to achieve anything I'd planned for any particular day😅! Currently I have NO problems in quickly falling asleep but incessantly waking up feeling so cold❄ , shivery⛄ , my limbs being so spastic (stiff/rigid) & my mind feeling MORE confused than it is when I'm wide awake🙃, my reluctance to getting up has become 1 my biggest battles! I WILL "win this" and wishing everyone here, continues to win (or least better manage) yours💗 x

I am definitely a morning person. I go to bed at around 10.30 or just after and am up between 7.30_ 8 am. I am not the best sleeper and wake up many times during the night. I make sure I don't nap in the day, never have and never will however tired I am. I do think you have to have a bedtime routine.

I am definately a night person but I don't always lie in bed late either, certainly not a 'crack of dawn' person. My wife can sleep 24 hours a day and will stay in bed as long as she is not disturbed. Day time sleeping is part of her regular methods which can be up to 4 hours or more. She has to use her bed to connect to her CPAC machine but I can't sleep during the day as it gives me bad nights. Even if sleepy in the afternoon I just get a drink and something sweet in case my blood sugars low, I soon perk up!

I've been an 'early bird' right from toddler days, due to living in Zimbabwe and South Africa and the lifestyle we had. Even after moving to Northern Ireland now over 4 years ago, my husband, dog and I are still up after 4.00 a.m. It's a beautiful time of day, so peaceful and the air is cool and fresh.  We're normally in bed by 10.00 and I'm up a few times a night as don't sleep well due to the mixture of medications I'm on etc., but somehow it doesn't make me want to lie in or sleep during the daytime.

Winter is coming now, it's getting dark and cold, but that won't stop our early morning routine; my dog still needs to go out in the morning after being in at night, and he keeps both my husband and me going for hours!

I am a night-owl/early-bird in one!!  I go to sleep anywhere from 0130am to 0330 / 0400am and get up about 0500am!!   I usually get 2-4 hours of sleep a night.  BUT I also take a nap every day in the afternoon for a couple of hours.  If not, I would be a zombie!

I do love the early mornings.  Its so peaceful and beautiful outside.  I can walk the dogs and not worry about their feet burning on the ground (we live in AZ)  Its also nice to go grocery shopping early--no people are around and I can get in and out quickly.

I must be a morning person  I suppose but because I don’t sleep well I’m often still tired when I get up. I usually get up between 7 & 730 during the week if I’m playing golf but 6.30 if I’m baby sitting and have to do the school run. I like to get out early on the golf course so it’s not busy ans I don’t have to wait around

I am a night owl, getting up at 9to 9.30am and stay up till midnight. Its a routine I got when the children got older. It only gets broken if I have a grandchild to stay, or I'm on holiday , when I want to start the day early to enjoy everyminute of a new location!

I used to be a night owl but I hate getting up late now. I am in bed by midnight and like to get up about 7/730. I don’t sleep well and usually I’m up for camomile tea in the night after lying awake for a couple of hours.

I have had approx 5 hours sleep in 48.Have tried everything I have heard of or read it makes no difference. If I’ve had 3 bad nights in a row I do sometimes have a power nap in the afternoon as I am shattered and can’t keep my eyes open.

I sleep. I also have severe sleep apnea and the CPAP wakes my husband who wakens me, He sleeps from 0100 to 0830. I lay awake for hours sometimes and he forces me awake in the morning somewhere between 0830 - 11.30. It's a complete mess.
