Hello everyone,

How are you today? emoticon cute

Though we can't hear it tick, our body has its own internal clock - the circadian rhythm. Our personal circadian rhythms, or "chronotypes" vary from person to person but may also run in families. The two main chronotypes are what we commonly refer to as "early birds", those who tend to go to bed and wake up early, and "night owls", those who tend stay up and wake up late.

If you'd like to learn more, don't hesitate to read our article: Can waking up early benefit our health?

What about you? Are you more of an early bird or a night owl? Has that changed as you've aged? Would like to be one more than the other? Have you ever tried to change your sleep cycle?

I am a night owl, as I do not feel tired until a few hours after midnight. I am old and I have been this way most of my life. I like to feel a bit sleepy when I retire for sleep, as I do not want to be waking up unduly. I like to sleep on a bit in the morning to get my full quota of sleep and rest. I find the quietness before going to be and ideal time to read a bit and think about things. I usually fall asleep for a bit when looking at TV with my my wife after our evening meal.

Hello all,

How are you today? Have you had a chance to see some of our general discussions like this one? 😊

What about you? Would you say you're more of an "early bird" or a "night owl"? Has it impacted your health at all, or maybe vice versa?

@Beastie @niamhjudgeoconnell @mack73 @Sam1972W @Jomonk @PaulECarden @Chaszzz @susiewong20

Feel free to share with us here! 😀

Take care,

I'm an early bird. No soon as I wake around 7am, my assistance Dog helps me up by putting her head through between my arm & torso this helps enormously, she did that without any teaching! Then I quickly open the back door for her toilet. Bed at 10 to 10:30pm.

I’m definitely not an early bird now , I go to bed about 10.30 , read fora while and then I don’t get up until about 8-8 30 , not very motivated once up , it’s not good really wish I could get moving a bit quicker , feel so lethargic which my gp said was lack of vitamin D .but I always have a foggy head , just can’t seem to clear ,anyone else have this problem and how do they cope with it ?

@Silverlady I too am a 'night owl' and also unfortunately share & empathise with your lack of motivation and constantly fighting historic, oppressive lethargy but I attribute this to having MS for 44+ years. How I cope with this - I suppose I just, doggedly see each day as a new day- always hopeful that the following day I'll be able to achieve more than the previous day. I have recently re-started having 1 multivitamin a day (these contain 100% of the majority of the recommended vitamins/minerals). I also remain determined to STOP believing/comparing myself to who and what I used to achieve in the past because I strongly believe it's healthier, in every sense, to live in the "now" because this should/will form what the future will hold for me? Brain fog is another element that I 24/7 live with and do my best to manage this through "engaging" my brain/forcing myself to using it although 'it' doesn't seem to want to do this😂! Please feel free to contact myself anytime. I continually strive to more regularly access/contribute to Carenity but being 71, time & energy are never as abundant as I'd like them to be😏. Sending you all my best wishes and sincerely hoping you'll keep finding different ways to better manage your obstacles in living a fuller life, that I think everyone deserves. xx

I’ve always been a night owl. As a child I regularly got into trouble for reading by torchlight under the bed clothes so that I didn’t disturb my little sister and hopefully heard mum or dad coming upstairs early enough to turn out the torch and pretend to be asleep! All through my working life I could go to bed at 1-2 am and still get up early enough to get the children to school before I went to the office. When my youngest daughter was born, I was studying for an Open University degree and at that time, had two teenagers so I used to study from around 11pm when everyone else went to bed until baby wine for her middle of the night feed, then go to bed and get up at 6am!! Now retired, I rarely go to bed before 1.30-2am.

Life does certainly change one's pattern of sleep as medication plays a great part in interrupting it, and consequentially changing it permanently! During the 30 years I was taking a cocktail of anti Epileptic meds, I slept for England and had no real pattern to my sleep. However in the last 8 years, since stopping most meds after Epilepsy surgery, I like 8 hours sleep a night but am likely to get a second wind late in the evening, so I might be considered a night owl!

I was always a morning person in my early career, as a mother but as I become unwell I suffered from fatigue, to cut a long story short, I find if I get up earlyish I feel dreadful for the rest of the day ( sheer exhaustion) so the way I deal with this is to take my time getting up which is around midday before finally getting going. I don't know why this happens but it's not pleasant.
