Hello everyone,

How are you today?

In recent years, you may have heard of the gluten-free diet. But what is it? What is gluten?

A gluten free diet is one that cuts out gluten, a protein found in most grains (ingluding wheat, barley, rye and triticale). Gluten can trigger serious health problems or other insensitivites, particularly in people with coeliac disease or other digestive disorders. This diet has also become popular among people who haven't been diagnosedwith a gluten-related medical condition, as it is reported to improve overall health, reduce inflammation, help with weight loss and increase energy.

And you, what do you think? Have you tried a gluten-free or a reduced-gluten diet yourself? Have you seen any health benefits? Is it complicated to follow on a daily basis? Do you have any trips or tricks to share with us?

And if you haven't tried it, would you be interested in testing it out? Why or why not?

Feel free to share and discuss in the comments below!

Take care,
Courtney

@Courtney_J I've actually tried this in the past and it was of some help to me. I'm not sure if it reduced inflammation, but it did help my digestion and my fatigue. I ended up giving up because at the time it wasn't as well known and there weren't many gluten-free products available and what was available wasn't very good! Especially the bread! It was mostly a convenience issue for me. I've been thinking about restarting it, so if anyone knows of any good brands or recipes, please share!

@Ankyloo I've heard it helps with inflammation but I've never tried it. Interesting to hear that it helped you. I've been interested in it for a while but it seems hard to do.

I have diviculitus and one of my triggers is wheat gluten. I have followed a gluten free diet for a number of years. It used to be expensive, difficult to get hold of and was tasteless. Now it's much better, the price has come down and there are some really good quality products around. The only place I have any trouble in is Waitrose who don't seem to stock it at all. Morrisons and Sainsbury seem to have the best range.

I am coeliac and also lactose intolerant so I haven't just 'tried' it, 8 actually 'live' it. Mercifully, over the last decade or so, there have been massive advances in the ranges of 'free from' foods, which is maybe why those that don't need to eat this way are willing to do so.

Most GF foods are higher in sugar levels than nonGF, so I'm not convinced by the weight loss claim. Also, I don't believe it would be a good diet for a diabetic, unless the person had both problems (coeliac and diabetes).

I have been gluten free for about three years. I didn’t think it did much for inflammation although I did find it did keep my pain levels miminal for RA so don’t take painkillers all the time and only times my pain levels rise is when rainy cold or damp and even then don’t take the full dose required. Although I didn’t lose weight what I found is it kept my weight stable so didn’t put more on. My only wish is that they would fortify the products with vitamins as very few products have them and although the portions size is smaller I welcome that.

I have had Coeliac disease all my 64years but was lucky enough to be diagnosed at the age of 2years! My parents had a real struggle with the strictness of my diet as I have 2sisters & 3 brothers! On reflection my Mam was fantastic at serving up meat and 3 veg every night I came home from school! I would not recommend a gluten free diet outside of Coeliac disease as it lacks the basic vitamin D for which I take supplements!
