Hello everyone,

How are you today?

In recent years, you may have heard of the gluten-free diet. But what is it? What is gluten?

A gluten free diet is one that cuts out gluten, a protein found in most grains (ingluding wheat, barley, rye and triticale). Gluten can trigger serious health problems or other insensitivites, particularly in people with coeliac disease or other digestive disorders. This diet has also become popular among people who haven't been diagnosedwith a gluten-related medical condition, as it is reported to improve overall health, reduce inflammation, help with weight loss and increase energy.

And you, what do you think? Have you tried a gluten-free or a reduced-gluten diet yourself? Have you seen any health benefits? Is it complicated to follow on a daily basis? Do you have any trips or tricks to share with us?

And if you haven't tried it, would you be interested in testing it out? Why or why not?

Feel free to share and discuss in the comments below!

Take care,
Courtney

I'm a vegan, so gluten free is a part of my diet, as it has no dairy, eggs or gluten in it, I don't eat the bread as I find it heavy and undigestible, but I eat some of the products, I find I don't have as much stomach problems. I make my own coleslaw with some of the products, and I like the chow mein stir fry sauce just add my own ingredients.

If you suffer with coeliac disease then I would suggest everyone get the coeliac app and sign up as they also have a coeliac scanner on it and it will help with the ingredients of a certain foods I find it very helpful because sometimes supermarkets or shops do recall certain foods that are not suitable also you can put recipes in or get recipes shows how to cook or methods of making certain dishes you can also get help with perscriptions for certain items it is a fabulous app and very helpful to as sometimes you go out and find it difficult to read ingredients but with coeliac UK app it will help you more so I definitely find it helps Tigger

It's a case of having to follow a gluten free diet for me. Also lactose free, as I'm intolerant of that too. I wouldn't advise a gluten free diet for diabetics unless it is strictly necessary as it tends to be much higher in sugar...

I have IBS. Normal bread gave me a lot of acid, I decided to replace the bread with rice cakes which I have with a banana in them most morning's. I miss the bread especially the crusty type. If I bake I tend to use alternative flours but that’s not very often these days. I still suffer badly with IBS at times.

For 2 days I have been violently sick I am a coeliac and I have been diagnosed with this horrible disease I am gluten free and wheat free but I think I have eaten something that has had gluten in I spent a whole day in bed and I drank plenty of fluids as I was very dehydrated still resting but I was told by my specialist that if you have not been diagnosed with coeliac disease you should never be on a wheat and gluten diet as it is bad for you I am a coeliac and I cant eat the foods I want to I have to watch what I eat and read every label I was diagnosed when I was 49 but had been a coeliac from birth and all foods I had eaten as as child had caused damage to my intestines and stomach and I was anorexic, foliate level,2.5 I was suffering from brittle bones, had no calcium, and also was anaemic close to dying at the time couldnt walk had severe stomach cramps diorea and constantly sick since being diagnosed I have lost all my teeth had to be extracted by an operation, deaf in both ears ,glaucoma, osteoporosis arthritis and many other illnesses on top so now I have been trying to get labelling compulsory, you never see advertisers in hospitals, surgeries, and chemists but you see everything for vegans and vegetarians I get so cross because coeliac is a disease not an allergy and ours is compulsory theres is an option we dont have a choice they do why cant the government do something so it says on foods suitable for coeliacs it's not rocket science it is life changing for us Tigger

People are becoming more aware of the word Coeliac but very understand the basic meaning of the word Gluten which you have explained very succinctly above! I was diagnosed with Coeliac disease aged 2years and considering I'm 64, I have never met anyone else diagnosed so early! If you were please let me know, there is so much I'd like to share!

I eat gluten-free because following years of stomach problems, I tested intolerant of gluten-containing cereals. I also tested intolerant to cows milk, so I now follow a dairy-free diet as well. Vegan foods often contain gluten, so just following a vegan diet is not sufficient. The dairy-free part doesn't bother me as I have avoided milk for years by choice because it always did seem to upset me. The only problem is when I eat out as some establishments don't seem to know what's in their own items/meals, so they are immediately put on a red list for me. Why people choose to eat gluten-free puzzles me, as it is not a diet for losing weight - it more often than not has a higher sugar content than more 'normal' foods (for want of a better expression), so if it's for that reason it would seem to be defeating the objective. I hope it's because people find it helps their digestion. I just wish a trusted firm would make a palatable bread that has a decent shelf-life!

@Bebbabe53 I'm sorry to hear that you are both gluten and dairy intolerant! That must make for a limited choice of foods both at home & eating out! If you have been diagnosed with Coeliac disease, you will find many helpful tips from the Coeliac Society. They will probably recommend a good brand of bread, on prescription, and also take into account your dairy intolerance. Good wishes
