Prescribers (such as GPs) are encouraged to prescribe medicines by their generic name. This is because generic medicines are usually as effective as the branded versions, but can cost up to 80% less.

This frees up NHS resources to pay for other treatments. It also gives the pharmacist the  widest choice of products to dispense. This can be important, particularly if there is a shortage of a particular product.

In the UK, the cardiovascular therapies are the ones that dominate the generic prescribing. They make up four of the five highest places among the top 5 most prescribed generic drugs.

The thyroid treatment levonthyroxine sodium is the only non-CVD treatment encroaching in the top five places.

The five most prescribed generic drugs are:

1. Simvastatin is prescribed to 37.3 million people
2. Aspirin is prescribed to 33.9 million people
3. Levothyroxine sodium is prescribed to 21.9 million people
4. Ramipril is prescribed to 19.3 million people
5. Bendroflumethiazide is prescribed to 18.8 million people

Are you taking or have ever taken one of this? What is your feedback? You think they are as effective as the branded ones?

Thanks for your comments

Hi Gilda,

I take Levothyroxine sodium, me personally have never had an issue whilst taking it. My opinion whatever the cost, if it works then I don't see what the issue is.

Hi Gilda.

I take Aspirin and Bendroflumethiazide - since 2001. As far as I can tell they are effective and they certainly don't give any problems.

Hi Gilda

I am taking Ramipril for hypertention. It seems to work fine for me, and I have had no side effects and I have no issue with it. It keeps my blood pressure well under control.

Hi Everybody, hope we have all got through the festive period ok? Just a wee continuation on this subject. We are all different and are gonna react to medication differently. Trial and error with a lot of drugs. I am on a 200mgs of sertraline, 45mgs of mirtazapine and 100mgs of quetiapine daily for depression /bipolar. It's taken a 3 to 4 yrs of trying meds that failed. But finally this cocktail is ticking all the right boxes so far!!!

Hello everyone!

@Debbie77 is right, and each one is different and react different to medication, the important thing is that the combination we take makes us feel better.

The other super important thing, and that I am glad, is that you can share your experiences with this medication with others. This is how the site gets better and better for the rest of the members, with the insight of everyone :)

I wish you all the best of years.

Gilda

I think the cost is not at all imoortant. Its what the medicines help to do.

The NHS tries to cut cost as much as possible. I would rather take an expensive drug than cope with all the side effects from the cheaper drug .

Hi every one.

I had my blood results back today and my Cholesterol is 6.5. I am told that the normal should be 5 or under. Mine has been 6 for a while. Today my GP has put me on Atovastatin 10mg one at night to reduce the risk of Stroke. I am aged 71 and my brain scan showed furring of the small blood vessels in the Frontal and Temporal lobes of the brain. Is any one out there taking these tablets? What I would be interested in knowing if any one has had any adverse side effects? Also, has it helpful in lowering the Cholesterol?

I will be grateful for your input. Thank you

Christina
