Prescribers (such as GPs) are encouraged to prescribe medicines by their generic name. This is because generic medicines are usually as effective as the branded versions, but can cost up to 80% less.

This frees up NHS resources to pay for other treatments. It also gives the pharmacist the  widest choice of products to dispense. This can be important, particularly if there is a shortage of a particular product.

In the UK, the cardiovascular therapies are the ones that dominate the generic prescribing. They make up four of the five highest places among the top 5 most prescribed generic drugs.

The thyroid treatment levonthyroxine sodium is the only non-CVD treatment encroaching in the top five places.

The five most prescribed generic drugs are:

1. Simvastatin is prescribed to 37.3 million people
2. Aspirin is prescribed to 33.9 million people
3. Levothyroxine sodium is prescribed to 21.9 million people
4. Ramipril is prescribed to 19.3 million people
5. Bendroflumethiazide is prescribed to 18.8 million people

Are you taking or have ever taken one of this? What is your feedback? You think they are as effective as the branded ones?

Thanks for your comments

Hi, nineteen_gale, I take Atorvastatin 80mg because I also have high cholesterol and furred arteries. Atorvastatin is one of the most rigorous of the statins but it does seem to play havoc with joints resulting in pain, hopefully this will not affect you.

Thank you Laney 365.

I already am a sufferer of Osteo Arthritis and suffer from painful knees and fingers as well as thumb joints in both hands. Will Atorvastatin make my joint pain worse? Only started on them last night and am on a very low dose of 10mg. Hope it doesn't play havoc with my joints. I will keep an eye o that. Thank you. GP also gave me a prescription for Meloxicam 7.5mg for OA, but I dot want to start on 2 new drugs at the same time. So I am going to hold off with those till I have had Atorvastatin for a month at least. I have not had Meloxicam before and not sure if it would suit me. But I am taking Glucosamine sulphate, MSM Turmeric  Omega 3 and Cod Liver oil supplements to keep my pain a little tolerable. I would like to hear from any one who is taking Meloxicam if they help reduce joint pains and do they suffer from any side effects. Thank you.

Hi Gilda

I used to take simvastatin and asprin cardiac support dose but not any more.

I stopped the asprin after 6 months on it as it was causing excessive bruising (I would bruise just by gripping a broom handle) and it also gave me acid reflux.

The simvastatin I started on 20mg dose, later went down to 10mg, my cholesterol levels have been good for a number of years and I had taken myself off the drug for 6 months and cholesterol levels checked and remained at a lower level.  My doctor said it would be down to the regular exercise I do and good diet.

I take diltiazem as prescribed for blood pressure, one dose a day instead of the usual 2, as the one dose controls my blood pressure levels well.  I also take cQ10 other end of the day.

Well atm I'm on diazapam, Zapain  (for the pain) and deffo addicted to them! I also take Gabapentin, and Tegretol with 40mgs fluroxitine been on these tablets since forever. And they are absolutely useless. I have secondary progressive ms. But with a bit of luck now I will get sorted as I've moved from North Wales to Sheffield England!  Hurray! And am awaiting a consultation with my new doctors this weds which in turn will hopefully get me an appt to see a new consultant at Sheffield Hallam shire Hospital. I will let u all know the outcome hopefully it will be at long last since where I used to live didn't have a clue, no care, no support, nothing :/ wish me luck I've suffered long enough and I need some kind of life back.......
