Fashions seem to be changing when it comes to Intrusive Thoughts. Psychiatrists seem to look at them as a sub variety of OCD. I have known plenty of people who were treated with drugs. The most popular treatment was to go for Serotonin affecting drugs, The SSRI's and Clomipramine for example. Some went for anti-psychotic drugs instead.

But there are psychological methods. When I was a trainee therapist I was given the case of a woman whose intrusive thoughts were that she would stab someone. Not having the slightest idea what to do I consulted my supervisor. He told me I should buy her a knife and teach her relaxation. He believed that she should carry the knife at all times and gradually she would realize that having the thought didn't mean she was ever going to act on it. I was absolutely terrified. After all what do you do with someone who is afraid they are going to stab someone, give them a knife. But my supervisor was right, it pretty much worked.

Clinical Psychologists at Community Mental Health Teams seem to get to do a fair amount of this sort of work. They are used to all the variety of forms that Intrusive thoughts can take, Violent, Sexual, Blasphemous etc. It might be worth seeing how confident your GP is about dealing with this. If the answer is not very then a referral to your CMHT might be best.

I hope the Clomipramine works for you, it is a perfectly sensible choice if you are taking the drug route. I had problems with CBT. I was considerably more B than I was C for a start. I had a number of people who reacted badly to the CBT materials that started to float around. I used Google to see what was about now. My first hit was an example of what caused the problems - a sense of being talked down to.

I also hope your CBT doesn't have too much of a waiting list.

I am glad you are at the top of a CBT waiting list rather than at the bottom. What makes you think that being anxious makes you unsuitable for CBT ? It is very widely used in Anxiety and the success statistics are pretty good. People being treated who have multiple conditions isn't particularly rare either. The real problem is the number of sessions on offer. Obviously if you have Depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Intrusive Thoughts and your CBT provider only offers 8 sessions maximum, fitting treatment in could be a struggle. I hope something a bit more open ended is on offer to you.

I wish you the best of luck for Tuesday. Take Care.

Steve

My intrusive thoughts, come from Experience and nothing to do with OCD. So how do we explain that? No offence just a question. Plus I fought for this country and to see it go to the rich brakes my heart for our kids.
