Hello. I hope you guys don't judge me for this question, because I really wanted to understand depression better so I could be a better friend.

Overall I don't struggle with depression. Of course, I have good and bad days but nothing extraordinary tbh.

My best friend tried to commit suicide because of depression two weeks ago. Both of us are in our late 30s. She has a great marriage, her husband makes a lot of money, they travel, live in a beautiful house and overall it looks like her life is a dream. I am still single and struggle with making ends meet on the other hand. I always thought she was very happy. Until a few months ago she started telling me that sometimes she wishes she didn't exist. She said that maybe it would be better for everyone like that. I tried to reassure her that she is the best and we all love her and then boom.. I get a call saying she is in the ER after a failed suicide attempt. How is this possible? Am I a bad friend for not noticing? Can you be depressed if you have everything? It's so hard for me to understand. Help!

Depression is one of the most prevalent mental health disorders, affecting around 1 in 6 adults in the UK. Half of all working people are suffering some level of deppression, 15% of women overall and 9% of men in the general population. We all suffer some sort of deppression at some stage in our lives with various levels from very low to serious mental health conditions. Our only hope is those around identify rising issues but getting help in a busted NHS is a minefield almost impossible to find a way through.

We have as an old couple just taken over care of our grandchild, both parents tried to commit suicide during the almost two year court process. The useless Social Services wanted to take the child into the broken care system that destroys 70% of children taken into care. No fun watching your child try to commit suicide with little or no help from the NHS. We tried many times to get him sectioned, getting him one into the mental health ward to be discharged the next day. Then experiments with the GP on the strength of tablets that would work over many months. Today he falls between massive deppression with externalfears for his future, while I can remain 'bank of Mum and Dad and regular contact we have been able to deal with matters but no doubt his life continues to have events that no one can control, just occasionally pick up the pieces. The Mother already had a mental health history, during the court process she committed arson as well as trying to commit suicide. Now dealing her mental health as she has limited access to her daughter which we have to supervise. Observing her closely for any kind of stress, she has episodes which can be dangerous for our grandchild.

Having experienced many suicides in my lifetime it is distressing that you cannot prevent them. Even tried to get authorities to take note and do something about it. Sadly they know all about it and cover it up and prevent even publication widely in the press. They believe bringing attention to 'suicide' will only cause other members of the public to follow suit.

Being in hospital due to a suicide attempt will be a bonus in away as the limited help available through the NHS, so she is on their radar. Her family will have greater awareness and access to help so hopefully should resolve her issues. The Samaritains have lots of info and help, that even you could make use of if needed, even your GP, online sources abound, stay safe!

I personally believe that some people do choose to be depressed, as they are afraid to face whats happening in the real world Some people may feel that it is the only way for them to face things as others have and possibly want to be the centre of attention.

As it can make them feel important, and give them a reason to carry on being depressed I understand that many people may disagree with my opinion and if they do i will accept theirs and respect them as people..

i have known some people who are compulsive worriers, and they will become anxious if they find that they dont have anything to worry about?
