Ask your GP for one, and then they will prescribe your strips for you as well

Where can I compare the different monitors that exist? There are so many of them and new ones appear on the market from time to time so it would be nice to have the information

Go to your GP or Diabetic clinic for a free one as the companies make the money on the test strips, all very similar. You can also buy them on EBay brand new and very cheap, going to chemist is expensive. So if you get strips free on prescription make does not matter but if you are paying for them check their price rather than the meters.

Best monitor - Freestyle Libre and sensors - it has revolutionised my control. I had no clue what was going on before - now I know exactly - and can make decisions based on what I learn. Unfortunately not available yet for Type 2 on prescription - and I am lucky as I can afford to buy - but if you are in the same position I would definitely try it. Even if just for a couple of weeks to see what food, tablets, exercise etc does to your blood sugar - as I said, its revolutionised what I am doing.

Not all GP Surgeries provide Monitors for patients unless you are on Insulin. And some Surgeries are telling people with Type 2 and on Metformin not to bother testing.
Buy your own Meter and test strips - you need to keep a check on your blood sugars and see what effect certain foods have on your Blood Sugars.

can anyone recommend a good monitor for occasional use? At my last test with GP my glucose level had jumped to 8.4 and I got put on Metformin to bring it down. Am interested in seeing if it's working & to monitor my levels more closely.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
