Hello everyone,

If you haven’t already seen in the news, many countries in Europe and elsewhere in the world are starting to discuss or put measures in place to end the COVID-19 lockdown.

In his address last night, the Prime Minister Johnson announced an easing of restrictions regarding the lockdown rather than simply ending it.

The Government has established five tests that will have to be met before considering an end to the lockdown:

  • Ensuring that the NHS has sufficient capacity
  • A sustained and consistent fall in the daily mortality rate
  • Reliable data showing a decreasing rate of infection
  • Adequate supplies of tests and PPE for demand
  • No risk of a second peak of the virus

In addition, a new COVID Alert System, determined by the R number (the rate of COVID infection) and the number of Coronavirus cases, has been put in place to indicate how strict social distancing measures must be. It includes five alert levels, Level 1 meaning COVID-19 is no longer present in the UK and Level 5 meaning a critical material risk of overwhelming the NHS.

Starting Wednesday, people in England who "can't work from home" will be encouraged to return to work, but should avoid public transport if possible. From this date people in England will also be able to spend more time outdoors for leisure, including unlimited outdoor exercise, sport, or sun in parks. The PM also indicated that starting June 1, England may be in a place to reopen primary schools, shops and nurseries in phases, and hopes that some public places (including restaurants, cinemas and places of worship) may reopen starting July 1.

The Welsh, Scottish, and Northern Ireland governments have indicated that they will not be following with the June 1 date for primary schools. Decisions are awaited regarding the opening of shops and other businesses.

What do you think about this easing of restrictions? Is it too early? What do you think the impact will be on those who are extremely vulnerable or at risk? Do have any questions? Have you had any further information from your GP or medical team?

Feel free to share your thoughts and questions below!

Take care,

Courtney

It is easy for those of us that are over 60 to feel down and that we have been thrown under the bus, this virus is ageist,  some young people feel invincible and are attending mass gatherings, with the potential to spread the virus further and thus increase the likelihood of more deaths amongst the 60 plus group.

But I think that we need to remain positive, keep believing that a vaccine or treatment is within grasp by the end of the year, most of us have endured longer periods of stress than 6 months. We need to control our destiny by remaining in isolation and not contracting the virus during the next few months, and then when a vaccine or treatment becomes a reality we can look back at this period as another bad moment in history, but with optimism for our future.

Very well said Mike. I totally agree with you. I have no intention of venturing out, no matter how long it takes. if only every one feels like we do, there will be less deaths and less confirmed cases. Good luck every one. Be positive take care and stay safe.

I believe lock-down has given us all a new meaning to life. Its taught me to be positive and grateful for the things I have compared to so many who have lost almost everything, together with any hope of future employment and more.

We all have our separate health issues, but thinking of the future this will be a historical moment/event to think of which I feel has brought people and communities closer together.

I look forward to going back to my independent self, not being a hermit and venturing out into the open again. Having epilepsy is a major risk for me without a warning signal before a seizure, but this still won't stop me from going out soon.

Stay safe and healthy!

I can relate to that Lesmal. I'm 40 this year and more than half my life has gone. I too suffer from epilepsy since birth. I was anxious initially when Covid came and Social Distancing meaning you can't meet extended friends and family. But on the positive, it has brought back the community spirit. Whilst the virus has changed many lives many for the worse through redundancy or reduced hours(part time better than no job) the world is at my pace. Less chaotic and stressful and more calm, as I struggle to keep up within a fast moving world.

I agree about the community spirit. We're all in the same boat so to speak, and people are making the best of a bad situation.

I understand where every one stands on the easing of the lockdown, like others I will keep doing what we are used to today. No easing for me, I will continue to self isolate until there is a cure, and to keep my wife and I secure.

My wife was tested again yesterday Friday 12th June at her nursing home, so hoping she is negative when we get the results tomorrow Sunday. We are still using Zoom for our Christian meetings and I think this will continue for a long time yet.

@mrjerry55 Thank you for the optimism ,  Thats all we can do  is hope for best that the research comes up with some answers.  At best those with health issue like ourselves can only hope we do not catch the virus by staying as isolated as possible and follow  the guidelines after all, all bacterias & viruses are dangerous to some of us. Its a bit like russian roulette either lock ourselves away forever or take a chance. The choice has to be our own what ever we do.

@paulg54‍

Hi Paul. Have you got the result of your wife's test? Is she negative? I hope so. Like you we are staying in lock down. Hubby is shielded for his medical conditions and me fir my age. So we are going to stay put until successfully vaccinated. Let us know your wife's result. Good luck.

Thank you for your concern, nineteen gale, my wife again is negative. I am so pleased that our hard work is keeping my wife safe and clear from the virus, but we will continue doing the same and not become complacent as others have been doing. So like us keep with it and keep safe, our love to you both.
