Hello everyone,

How are you today?

The pharmaceutical groups Pfizer (USA) and BioNTech (Germany) announced on Monday 9 November that their vaccine candidate is 90% "effective" in preventing Covid-19 infections, according to preliminary results of their large-scale phase 3 trial, which is still ongoing.

What do you think about this? Do you plan to be vaccinated as soon as the COVID-19 vaccine is on the market?

Feel free to discuss and share in the comments below!

Take care,

Courtney

@cooperman‍

The simple fact remains only the old or clinically vulnerable are under threat from Covid. A handful of children and few young fit people have in fact died from the disease usually from underlying conditions. You can easily access the numbers involved who died, their age groups, underlying conditions publised by the government. There has been no recorded incident worldwide of a teacher catching the disease from their pupils. The handful of Police officers that have died have had clear underlying conditions or part of the vulnerable groups. The vast majority of people under 50 suffer no symptoms at all or simple colds like symptoms. The real issue of the young getting the disease is they will pass it on to old or the vulnerable, so testing is essential. The vaccine does not stop an infected person passing on the disease, nor does it stop you getting Covid. All the vaccine does is reduce the symptoms, so the old and vulnerable do not overwhelm the NHS. There is no benefit to society or individual for vaccinating young people under 50 unless they have an underlying health condition.

@robjmckinney‍ and @cooperman‍ ... I see both your views here, but to me, the vaccine should be given to all whether they are vulnerable, front line workers, young and under 50-year-olds, teachers, health workers, police, bus drivers, etc.  Many young adults have caught COVID also; it just doesn't affect the elderly and can affect anyone.

Obeying the rules is essential, but unfortunately, some people just don't seem to care. House parties continue, gatherings of more than six continue, etc. The Police are trying their utmost to control the situation but once again, they get the brunt of it in some situations.

Many who have passed away also have had underlying health conditions, but my opinion is that the vaccine should be for all, and waiting for one's turn to me is the logical way around it whilst obeying all rules at the same time. I am in Group Six, but if I had children, I would also like to know they would be vaccinated at some point, not just left because they are under 50 and don't suffer the simple cold or other symptoms as you put it.

 Hi lesmal,

Well I had my jab today, quick and no issues but the issues under discussion are the difference between facts and myths. Normally we have between 20 to 30 thousand die each year from flu each year. This has been reduced to less than 10 thousand through the use of the flu vaccine (few young people die from flu). In the same way the Covid vaccine will reduce the death rate and hospitals from being overwhelmed. The flu vaccine is not aimed at young people because again it mostly kills the old and those with underlying conditions. Covid is just a variation that is slightly more infective but again kills and hospitalises the old and those with underlying conditions. Young people under 50 have little to fear from covid so pointless getting a vaccine as they still get infected and able to pass on the disease. Test, trace and isolate is the only viable tool for those under 50, which simply stops them infecting others. Vaccinating under 50s is pointless unless they have an underlying condition like diabetes etc. Out of all those deaths from Covid diabetics form the largest group, so in theory they should have been one of the highest groups.

Just love the Spanish Flu history which all came down to immunity, those born before the 20th century had immunity due to earlier Flu's. Those born after and fought in WW1 had no immunity and died in their millions. So you had the old surviving that disease well and easily, the young and fit dying like flies. Apparently it caused the bodies defences to go into overdrive, so the young and fit own bodies killed them and those weaker systems bodies survived. Herd immunity in the end becoming the solution which took a year or so but millions died in the meantime. Herd immunity is the only real answer long term, with the old and infirm having an extension to our glorious flu jab, stay safe!
