Flares in ankylosing spondylitis can be mild or severe, and can include pain and fatigue.

What helps you personally manage your flares? Is it just your usual pain medication or do you also use complementary medicine, like exercising, hot bath or breathing techniques, or other?

How much time did it take you to understand your flares and to find what works best in your case?

I do use my usual meds and maybe Tramadol injections which tend work much quicker. I use hot packs on the the most painful parts and rest if I can.Often a flare is followed by extreme fatigue so when that happens I just sleep.

A cocktail of Gabapentin, Tramadol and Paracetamol usually does the trick but I feel really washed up for quite a while afterwards.

Just get on with it. Usually sleep for a while, and wait for the next flare.....

Hello all,

I hope you're doing well! I thought I would revive this older discussion that can be potentially very helpful!

How do you manage your AS flares? Is there anything you can do to prevent them? Do you have any tips on how to manage them?

Same way I manage all my other flares I plan time to do my activities and work and plan in time to rest between them all and recover. The worst flares I make sure self carenis first and foremost with lots of rest and heat, meditation and gentle yoga and walking. Which hurts a lot the same day but then next day see a huge difference.

Codeine , diazepam hot bath and then hot water bottle.
a bit of yoga helps and swimming when it was allowed outside of Covid lockdown.
