Hi..

I'm currently on 30mg of Mitrazepine - mainly for very bad insomnia. I starve myself all day every day and am still putting on weight. Can't stand to look at myself in the mirror. Had the same happen in the past with amitriptyline ( but at least that one made me fat and happy, and not fat and miserable to hell - which is what's happening with Mitrazapine). Tried Trazodone some years back and had a horrific reaction to it - sick to my stomach to the point of not being able to eat at all, horrific nightmares, brain 'zaps' etc...

Does anyone have any suggestions for an antidepressant that'll help with very severe insomnia without the side effect of weight gain? Neither sleeping pills nor benzos work anymore - been there, done that, for over 10 years - nothing works long term..

Thanks everyone. Also sorry that I'm not helping anyone on here, just posting my self-indulgent c**p without giving anything back..

@Daren, thank you very much for your response.. I've been off benzos for around 6 months now and won't ever take them again unless it's a dire emergency. You are absolutely right - there IS  a very solid  reason why they're not prescribed for longer than a  few weeks. My husband's Italian, and in some places in Italy, more in the South than the North, you can get virtually any med you want 'over the counter' - not 'officially' of course - as  long as you know the pharmacist and have cash to pay them.. :). That's how I got hooked in the first place.. not going there again.

And I DID get Promethazine at the weekend!

Thank you..

Julia

I second your words about benzos Daren. I was on the dreaded diazepam for about a year. I had to go into hospital to get off them! Really, really bad. Mess your memory up too.

All that because my GP put them on repeat, didn't  warn me and I didn't realise.

Very wide berth!

@Wasteofspace1970 it's warmed me to know that I am not alone with regard to the weight gain with being on Mirtazapine ~ I'm on 45mg due to my complex PTSD/Secondary trauma as I was unable to sleep ~ in the short space of time I've been on them I've gained over a stone in weight & when you have 'issues' about how you look, it really knocks your confidence & is soul destroying, as if I didn't hate myself enough already!  When I mentioned it to my Dr, she said 'Hmmm, I had noticed you'd padded out' ..!  I aired my concern, but her response was 'well they work' (ie making me sleep)

I'm not well versed in 'ill health' & am really struggling to come to terms with everything that's crept up on me & I'm struggling to reach out to ask for help too.  So I hope you don't mind me responding to your comment.

I wish you all the very best

Hi @Anastasia-Lee  - That is why this site is so great - you share your thoughts, others share theirs and it helps to hear their stories.  Sometimes they can point you in a useful direction that you haven't tried, tell you that what you are experiencing isn't unusual, that they have experienced it too.

I never have understood the statement 'there are those worse off than you' - why should the fact that some poor devil is suffering more than you make you happy?  However, knowing that others are suffering similarly, that you are not alone in things, is somewhat comforting and helps you have strength I think.

Keep posting - sometimes you will get an answer, other times you may not - I guess it depends if the other party is having a good day or not, but if they are not, maybe your post might be just what they need to start to turn their day around.

I was on Mirtazapine 30mg slept great but I ate all the time and put 2 stone on in 2 months. I stopped taking them and my GP has just started me on Sertraline. I take Piriton at night and that helps with my sleep.
