Hello all,

My GP told me that it was preferable to stop my weekly Enbrel injections at this time due to the Coronavirus in order to limit the risks.

I wanted to know what you all think about this and if  your GP or rheumatologist have advised you to do the same.

Thank you in advance for your answers,

Lawrence

@lawrenceJr I'm also on Enbrel for AS. My doctor advised me to continue until we get to a more advanced stage with the virus here. Of course,  I'd do a total stop if you start getting symptoms and also if any confirmed cases of the virus turn up in you community or among your family and friends. Anyway, the next stage is probably a matter of days away for us, we seem to be pretty much following Italy and France but more slowly... In the meantime, Draconian hygiene measures: no shaking hands, frequent hand washing, avoid crowds...etc. Xx

@lawrenceJr Hello Lawrence, thank you for starting this discussion. I feel this will be a common sort of question in the coming days.

If you haven't yet seen, we've just published an article on the coronavirus and the specific recommendations for those with chronic illnesses. I'll link it here below:

Coronavirus and chronic illness

Hello members, do you have any words of advice for Lawrence? Have you spoken with your GP?

My rheumatologist has advised to continue unless I show symptoms. The risk of stopping is that your body starts to produce antibodies to the enbrel making it less effective. Also some Chinese research indicates that biologics may be useful in preventing a cytokine storm which is what causes the fatalities. I’m socially isolating to minimise risk

@Runrig Hello all, I've been reading that the much-talked about hydroxychloroquine, which is a medicine often used for arthritis, is not really used for AS. They're saying that it may be helpful in curing the coronavirus. Personally I've been on Enbrel for years, My rheumatologist told me to keep taking it during this mess, to stop only if I have COVID symptoms and in any case to stay in self-isolation. He mentioned maybe adding Arava, do any of you know it?

@neighbour Hello neighbour, thank you for your comment. Have you read our latest article on Plaquenil and the coronavirus? I'll link it here: Plaquenil as a Treatment for COVID-19: What are the Consequences for Chronic Patients?

Hello members, I hope you don't mind me tagging you! Have you had any advice from your doctor about Enbrel? Have you even been on Arava? Can you share any experience with neighbour?
