Methotrexate has been great for me, it was the first medication I was put on when I was 21 and I have been able to reduce my dose over the years. I know some people experience nausea but I'm thankful that I have never had this problem.

I have been using methotrexate for 7 years now. I started on 10mg/week.

In the beginning  I caught every virus/bug going around but this has settled now.

I am now on 15mg/week.

Before using this drug, I was in a lot of pain and could barely walk upstairs or dress myself.

Now I am pain free and living a normal life. Working full time and having an active social life.

In the beginning when I first started taking Methotrexate I had niggling ailments like Thrush, Iritis, Ear infections, Chest infections anything that was 'doing the rounds' really.

I have been taking this drug since 2005, and after initial side effects I have no problems with it for the last 10 years or so.

I value it's reaction to my AS. Brilliant, Pain is now under control.

I am taking MTX for about more than a year and it has allowed me to go back to normal life. I started off with 10mg and then increased to 20mg. Its action is slow but pretty steady. There is a lot of fearful information on MTX, and it made me apprehensive about it, but fortunately, I did not have much side effects, except feeling headaches, nausea it the beginning, I also lost quite a bit of hair. Few tips from my experience:

- take it before you go to bed. Obviously, do not take folic acid on that day, or eat a lot of veg and spinach.

- Eat light food, with a lot of protein from plant sources and simple grains like white rice, rice noodles, rice pasta, buckwheat, quinoa with nonspicy lentil soup. I usually eat congi (mushy rice soup with lentil, chicken and ginger).

-Drink plenty of water and organic celery juice, if possible with organic ginger and turmeric to support the drug action. These also help to reduce inflammation which will allow you to keep the dose low for a long time.

- if you throw up, don't panic, it will get better slowly, but try not to stop the MTX.

- try a brief walk in the neighbourhood every morning, rain or shine. this will keep good blood circulation.

I have been taking this drug Methotrexate for sum 12 years for my 'Ankilosing Spondulitis Arthritis'. My Immune System was shot to pieces in the beginning but has 'settled down' over time. I still get the 'odd' bout of 'Genital Thrush' or 'Iritis' in one or both eyes needing injections into my eye, painless. Ear Infections lasting a couple of days is another 'niggling' problem. You are susceptible to what ever 'Virus' or 'Germ' that is doing the rounds.

The only concern of late has been that my LIVER was showing signs of 'leakage', so Methotrexate was stopped for two weeks then a blood test and back on the drug. My Consultant Raj Sengupta at 'The Royal Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases' in BATH in North Somerset has been monitoring my condition very closely, and has altered or added medication when he has thought that I would benefit, for nearly 9 years. I'm not complaining. I'm very 'Thankful' to them all at The RNHRD.

'Seek and ye shall find'  There is ALWAYS help out there if you look hard enough and ask if you are not sure about something.

Yeah!! So this 'Methotrexate' is OK for majority of the population. You'll get used to it's funny little ways.

Good Luck!!

Richard.
