Hello everyone,

Living with diabetes is lifechanging and can be a struggle. It's quite normal to experience a "burnout" at some point. Have you ever felt like giving up on controlling the diabetes?

Please feel free to share any thoughts or advice you have.

All the best.

Yes, I have experienced the infamous burnout. I was really feeling discouraged because I felt that it was constantly a struggle to manage my blood sugar levels and the thought of having to do it for the rest of my life really got me down. I actually started seeing a psychologist to help me through it.  I guess I had never really accepted my fate and it just a started to come out. But with help from the psychologist I realised how lucky I am that I actually have all the tools needed to control this disease. I also made sure to explain to my friends and family how important this is for me and they have been very supportive, which has been a huge help to get me back on track.

I have also experienced the burnout. For me they come once every few years. With that being said it's been a long time since the last one and I think it's because I am finally finding a good routine and I have gotten better control, I know my blood sugar levels better, I know which foods I react strongly to etc. Just hang in there and eventually you will find a routine that works for you. For me the diabetes doesn't control me anymore. I think that has been the difference for me!

My son has diabetes (he's 11 now and was diagnosed 2 years ago). My hubby and I are managing it, of course, but there are so many things to consider all the time. Whenever he's in school, or at a friend's house I feel a little panicked if everything will be alright. Of course his teachers and friends' parents have been taught how to help him. But I still worry when we are not around him. He is really brave and is not really affected psychologially by it, it's more us parents, lol! I don't think I will ever get a burnout, since I am protecting my child, but there are definitely days where I feel that it is mentally exhausting. I feel for everyone affected by this disease and I understand how draining it can be, but don't give in! Keep going and find support in friends and family. It really helps t know you have people on your side!

Ive been type 1 for 20yrs, and i think i may be going through the burnout stage. Just lately have just been so stressed, about my highs and lows of my blood sugars and just dont have the fight no more to go on with my diabetes.its just at a stage now were it does effort me mentally and physically.  It just hits me without warning and really leave me in tears. I know i could have worse conditions but 20yrs off daily injects 4 times a day has now took its toll.

I know how you feel @david68! I went through a burn out last year. I was stressed out since I felt that no matter what I did, my blood sugar levels were unstable. And it also hit me that I have been doing this for so long and no matter what, that will never change. I can't "inject it away". I got really good at talking to my friends about it. I don't have a wife to share these things with, so I learned to lean on my friends. Just having someone understand really helped me. Also I started thinking about myself. For years I was letting the diabetes dictate my life, I was using the diabetes as an excuse to not be adventurous. I started changing my mindset. Although I am sometimes restrained because of the diabetes, it should not be allowed to dictate my life and my goals. As you said it yourself, we could have much worse conditions, and we can actually influence the outcome of our disease. I also found inspiration in athletes with diabetes. Nothing is impossible - hang in there :)

Hello. I've been diagnosed as a T1 for 6 years now. I'm glad I'm not the only one whos ever felt like giving up. I got so far as i even thought about ending my life but that was also due to an unsupportive husband. Even ended up in intensive care for not taking my meds. He is gone now and it's just me and the kids. I still find it hard to control and it gets me down so bad but not to the point of ending my life anymore though it's been a struggle. I'm due to do the DAFNE course on how to adjust for normal eating. Any of you done it? I also suffer with Fibromyalgia and Diabetic Neuropathy so my quality of life is at an all time low, constantly in pain with my legs and joints. I've tried Lyrica and Neurontin but do not get the relief I need from them. Has anyone tried anything that actually works that I can ask my doctor about as I've told him my issues but he is not very helpful or forthcoming with suggestions. Hoping you can help...

I am a 41 year old T1 diabetic. I have had good days and bad days but for the last 4 or 5 years I have literally given up. I have most of the complications and totally regret not dealing with it. I just cannot get motivated at all. I am at a loss.

Hi, my first post here. I'm newly T1 as of last month and so far I'm coping or its not hit me yet. Waking up in ICU with tubes coming out of everywhere I think I felt lucky to be alive. I'm learning that it doesn't matter how long you manage it, your body will still throw a wobbler and go 1 way or the other. I'm glad there are so many forums as online communities are so helpful. Keep fighting, this disease doesn't define us x
